Duckin around Vernon?
« on: November 12, 2008, 08:12:25 PM »
Been doing some electric scouting.  Going through the fish and game web site.  It shows some land outside of Mt Vernon.  Wondering how crowded these areas get?  I get weekdays off all the time so I could hit it on non peak times.  I live sw of Rainier so just curious if it would be worth the drive.  I've got a little boat with small motor and a 19' sled.  Sled is aluminum color though.

Feel free to pm me

Hi Kris, How goes the hunting in Skagit?
I used to hunt there all the time when I lived over there.  There are some killer places, but with the new plan fish and game came out with all my snow spots are gone !!  There are still some good spots to hunt though esp if you have  a boat.
I would imagine that you would make a weekend trip out of it since it would be a good drive for you.
When the ducks get going good, the public wetland areas get pretty busy on weekends though.
Best of luck to you and all hunting fowl this year.

north fork skagit river, out in the flats can be great with some weather, especially the wind.  you don't need to hunt from your boat out there, even at high tide, the water wont fill you up if your on land.  really crowded on the weekends, but good during the week, launch at blake's.  check the tides, really low tides you may have some trouble getting in and out of the channels, but it's got to be real low, i've never got stranded.  haven't heard much from the south fork, not as good in my opinion.  another great weekday hunt is on the island segment, across from the public launch at the headquarters.  it's farmed, with flooded fields.  hit em pretty good there two years ago, not as good last year.  don't know if it was the weather or what.  i like the west part of the island.  i'm in kenmore and it's worth the drive for me, you have a little bit more to go though.

Thanks for the info.  As soon as I get an elk with the bow I'll be heading that way.  The ol lab is getting pretty excited.  I caught him eyeing some geese flying by yesterday.  I think he's jonesing.

Thanks again
Kris

There is a few ducks around, haven't had any great shoots yet. You might want to try the south fork as well, the game island can get hot at times during the week.

Saw a group yesterday pull down some honkers in the Samish Unit.  I was in the parking lot watching with binocs and one group shot 1 honker out of a group of birds passing by and this other group of 4 hunters had a guy who could call the sweet tones and brought them back to get 4 out of the same group.  Then about 30 minutes later he called another group of honkers in to get two more.  His double clucking was awesome and with no decoys.  I saw a lot of birds taken at the Samish for the one hour I was there.  I bet those guys go in early, but at least they got birds.  I tip my hat to whoever the caller was in the one group, way to go!!

Snowgoose, I was out there and saw that too, that was pretty cool to watch.  Those birds came right on in.  It was really slow for about the first 2 hrs but then the wind picked up and got the ducks flying a bit.  Still too many skybusters, but not enough to ruin the hunt.
