Montana Deer Success

Here is my deer from Montana. Although it isn't the size I was dreaming of before going over I feel lucky none the less due to the circumstances of the trip. It all started when I applied (my virgin Montana hunt) with three other veteran Montana hunters. Since they knew where we were going extremely well and seeing what they have brought back in the past I had big hopes. Unfortunately two of them had to bail just a week before the trip. With only two of us left we struck out for Lewistown to spend the night before heading to our campsite the following morning. During dinner in Lewistown my buddy starts feeling very dizzy and three hours later we are in the ER room with him being diagnosed with Vertigo. They keep him overnight and the next morning I find out that they are going to keep him one more night. We both knew he was not going to be in any kind of shape to hunt when they released him so he showed me on the map where they have gone in the past that was close enough to town to hunt that day. I take off for this location but the day is going by fast. I finally get to my location and only have about two hours of daylight left. Knowing I have to get back out early to pick him up from the hospital I am realizing these two hours will be my entire hunting experience this trip. I set out and quickly run into a bedded doe. I start rolling ravines and haven't seen anything since the doe when this guy rounds the corner of a ravine above me about an hour into my hunt. If I had seen him during the originally planned hunt, this early into it, I would of let him walk but with the current circumstances I immediately took him.  I feel very fortunate to have scored this buck with the limited opportunity I had. After getting to see Montana for the first time I am already planning how to get back ASAP.

Nice buck. What direction out of Lewistown did you hunt? Did you stop by Dons sporting goods store?

Like the others said, way to turn a bad situation into something productive. I am with you too, I can't wait to get back to MT. Congrats on a good buck.

Dang...that's too bad!  Stuff happens all the time on outta state hunts....just gotta deal with em' and make the most of the situation, which is exactly what you did.  Good for you.

I'm headed over to the Lewistown area next Wednesday.  Looks like the weather is still pretty dry over there.  Did you run into any snow in the area?

 Looks like east of Lewistown, good buck. I get vertigo too because of an inner ear problem, it really sucks. I feel like falling over sometimes. That's a good buck for the Lewistown area, it is a very popular and hard hunted area. First buck I saw leaving Lewistown in back of a truck last year was a two point....

Thanks everyone.  I ended up hunting off of Crooked Creek Road which is NE of Lewistown. My friends used to hunt there before they found a different location with a lot less people and I did see a lot of other hunters. Very little snow, just some small patches. 
My friend is still recovering. I had only heard of Vertigo before this weekend but after seeing it firsthand I can say that is some nasty stuff. We were very thankful it didn’t hit him when he was in the woods with how quick it affected him. It has started making us think about spending the money for those Garmin Rhinos. At the very least we could ping somebody with those to find them.
