Finally! Time to put it together.
« on: January 09, 2014, 04:33:28 PM »
It was supposed to have shipped before Christmas, oh well. No blood no foul. I have never owned a BlackHole Weaponry barrel so I thought I would give one a try. Went with a 6.5x6.8 SPC, 8 twist, 18", standard contour, rifle length gas, threaded 5/8-24 for a suppressor and the Killer Inovations Brake. If it shoots the 6x6.8 is next, depending on if they add a 8 twist for the 107 MK's.😉

I'll have to play with it a bit but I know for a fact the 123gr Nosler Custom Competitions are flat out shooting in the chambering. I'm going to put it together with with a standard AR lower and upper reciever for the time being.

Then I'm going to swap it over to a  matched LWRC Six8, upper & lower set. They will be releasing them soon, then I will be able to run my 6.5x6.8 with the Magpul 30 round 6.8 magazines. With a COAL of slightly over 2.30. The 6.8 Forum will be having a group buy on the LWRC 6.8 upper/lower set at a reduced price here shortly when their released.

Here are some targets shot by the guys doing the R&D with the 6.5x6.8. Using 8208XBR powder and 123 Nosler CC's.

100 yards.

200 yards.

I really enjoy the 6.5 Grendel, I just want to see if I can match the Grendel for accuracy and be able to run the 6.8 brass at slightly higher pressures and there's 6.8 brass everywhere. I personally can't stand the standard 6.8 SPC  but BHW simply fixed it so far by jamming a 6.5 bullet in it.

Yet to see how it shoots, I'm pretty finicky when it comes to accuracy. It could end up a tomato stake, we will see. There's mixed reviews when it comes to BHW barrels. I like the theory of polygonal rifling, I would expect it to shoot like the targets pictured above but time will tell.  So far the machine work has passed muster.

You havey attention, I was planning a 6.8 spc upper for the lower I already have but now I am rethinking it,
What was the total cost for the 6.5x6.8 upper for you ?

The barrel just came today. I was getting ready to start working on it but a friend dropped by. I don't know what the total upper cost will be yet I wanted to throw it together with parts I have just to try it out. On the other hand I want to put together a quality upper with some parts I don't have on hand and would have to order, along with some Cerakoting.

So it's the typical dilemma!

(1)
Put it together with what I have on hand and then have to pull it apart and rebuild it once parts come in(If it shoots?)

(2)
Build a quality upper and risk the chance of it not shooting.

There's is a back up plan, if everything goes sideways with the barrel. I have a Satern barrel in the exact same configuration (Other than twist 8.75)being finished soon in 6.5 Grendel.

I may opt for Option(1).

You guys and your small bore toys. :chuckle: When can I get an AR in 325 WSM or something useful? ;)

I've been thinking of trying the 6.5x6.8 in a Contender barrel but I've just never done it. I'm curious to see how this performs for you.

Same load pretty much I'm running. I think I need a BHW barrel

I have 2 BHW barrels, a 20 LBC (6.5 Grendel necked down to .204), and a 6mmX6.8 SPC that I just finished a while back.  BHW barrels are great, as long as you aren't in a hurry to get one!  Maybe they are faster at getting them out now that their move to Oregon is complete.  I ordered the 6mm barrel from Moses Lake, and 8 months later I got the barrel from Oregon.  Biggerhammer and I have talked, and I can't wait to see how his shoots!

Yeah, us guys and our small bore toys--the gun I'm building now is a custom 10-22!  :chuckle:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

Satern Barrels is your daisy for the 6.5 Grendel chambering.
