Barrow's Goldeneye
« on: November 12, 2008, 09:47:29 PM »
Hey,

Just wondering how common Barrow's Goldeneye are in E Washington.  I've never seen one before, but just a couple days ago we had one fly over our setup and my buddy killed him.  Nice big drake.  Shot him south of Spokane in the middle of wheat country.

Fairly common on the Columbia above Wells and Rocky Reach.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Lots of them in the MEthow, especially in winter time.  They will winter there along with Mergansers.  Neat ducks.  Doublelung is right, there are quie a few on the columbia right now.  Just look at the hordes of coots and you will notice some Barrows in there as well.

Yah, I'd say they're pretty common...not as common as the commons GE's though.....as the name implies....there's more on the wetside

Boy, we don't see em too often around Spokane.  Kinda like hooded mergies.... there around but certainly not in the numbers where you can count on shootin em.

Its a beautiful bird for sure and not shot up at all.  It was bigger than I expected too, it weighed two pounds eight ounces.  He's thinking about getting it mounted.  We definitely didn't expect to shoot one.

I have seen a few, mostly late in the season after the first of the year in the Yak Valley
