Wyoming elk unit 63/64?
« on: January 10, 2014, 03:58:39 PM »
I am looking for any and all info on elk units 63/64 in Wyoming. I have max points and am looking to draw out in 2015, I plan on bowhunting it. It's usually picked in the eastmans and huntin fool, just curious what hunters that have hunted it thought about the unit. Looking for the good, the bad and the ugly.... Outlaw Josey Wales! (George Costanza)

I'm not shy and I won't say I don't want to know about the honey holes, honey holes are great areas to hunt. I will share honey holes/info about areas I have hunted in Oregon and Idaho, of course through pm's. Thanks

I have always applied for 62, I've asked for any info as well but it never seems to come?!  Ill be watching this thread.  I have one less point than max, I'm thinking about putting in for a unit that is good but not great.  Was looking for an area with 320+ potential, now just want an area that holds a good population that a buddy and I can draw without waiting 15 years.  I hope you get the info your looking for, I haven't had much luck!

62/63/64 have declined in trophy elk size greatly over the last several years.  You can thank the wolves and grizzlies.  Personally, I'd look to apply elsewhere with max or one under max points.  I have.

I'm glad you got some info, you usually don't get a lot of guys giving info for Wyoming for some reason.

Be prepared to walk allot, be prepared for grizzlies in camp, If your an archery hunter prepare for one of the most epic archery hunts ever  ;) .. 64 has allot of private but its worth a couple days during the archery season but I would focus on 63 up the Wood

63/64 have allot of lower country that is good with hunter management areas, I prefer to hunt the west side of the units and yes they are wilderness

I'm doing the hunt by myself and am considering other units without griz issues. I don't want to return to my camp and have it destroyed by griz or my elk taken. I've considered  unit 45 in the bighorns and unit 7. Still undecided. I think 45 is more up my alley, especially since I am hunting solo and don't want to deal with the private land issues of 7. I've heard mixed results in 45 of bull quality, but I am not looking for top end bulls, just good solid 330-350 framed bulls. It's going to be a one time shot and I plan on going for 16-18 days, giving myself enough time to get it done.

45 can be an awesome hunt, but if you get allot of snow they are heading to private but if i had to pick between 7 and 45 i would take 45

Thanks longrange7mm for the input. I don't plan on drawing the type 1 just the type 9 and going the last three weeks of the season to hopefully avoid getting snowed out, not that you can't get hammered in september with snow.

No way would I use max pts on any archery only tag in wy IMO if you can draw a tag that you can hunt over 2 months why narrow it to a tag that requires 4-5 pts and cuts your season in half. What if we don't get that late september storm and those bulls don't come out of the high country. they are in wilderness and you have to sit at the boundary watching them. If you want a truly epic archery hunt you cant go wrong with 63/64 take bear spray and a pistol still hunt into the elk and start calling... Or wait until the last 2 weeks of season and come out and hammer a pig with a rifle. either way I wouldnt use max pts on a type 9  ;)

I'm only making one trip too hunt my tag. I could bowhunt unit 45 with a type 1 tag and hunt the last two weeks of september but then the rifle hunt doesn't open til oct. 15. I'm not making two trips (time/vacation/money). Type 1 takes 8 points, type 9 takes 7 and type 9 allows me to hunt the last three weeks of september archery.

I've bs'd with three different hunters that have hunted 63/64 and it is a great hunt and all three had griz issues. I've got allot of money into my camp and don't want griz destroying my camp when I am out hunting or taking my bull once it hits the ground. I'm not dragging the hayburners over on the hunt, it's a long haul and I can't hunt the wilderness anyway since I'm a scumball non-resident that can't use a GPS or read a map or so that's what wyoming fish and game believes. I can't leave the horses unattended since I will be by myself. I even looked at guided hunts in 63/64 $6,000-7,500 yeah that ain't gonna happen.

There is no such a thing as wasting points when you got a dead bull on the ground. I could care less of whether it's a type 1 or type 9 if it gives me the hunt I want.
