Backpacking Fishing Rods

I haven't carried fishing gear the last few years on my backpacking trips but this year I plan to get back into it. My old Eagle Claw pack rod has seen its better days. I'm interested in input on spinning rods from those who do a lot of high lake fishing. What do you use and what are the pluses and minuses.

I have a Diawa Spinmatic ultra light that breaks down into 4 pieces.  When put together it is 6.5'.  It has been a great rod for a number of years now.  I pair it with a cheap Quantum spinning reel with 4 lb test. 

The plus side to the rod is that it is very light weight and has great action.  Also I have had no problems with sections coming apart while fishing like some other pack rods that I have used.

The downside is that it didn't come with an adaquate case to carry it safely in.  I just made a case of my own out of PVC and capped both ends with one end having a screw cap.  The PVC is a bit heavy but there is virtually no way I will break the rod and it straps nicely to the outside of my pack.  As for the reel, I just store it in one of my packs pockets.

This setup has worked great for me for hike in and dirt bike trips into various lakes and streams.

Go right back and purchase another Eagle Claw they are still for sale. You don't have to purchase an expensive rod and reel combo to be successful.

The Batson SB720-4 blank makes a sweet backpacking spin rod.  It's a 6 foot, 4 piece, fast action blank, rated 4-8lb, that breaks down to fit nicely in a pack.  You can get the blank for about forty bucks..granted you'd have to have it wrapped.

Thanks for the input, lots of differing opinions. It must be like firearm brands and calibers, get what fits you the best.

I checked out the ST Croix backpack rods at the sportsman show and they are nice, will fit inside packs, plus come with a soft side case that are light weight. Should have bought the 6' one but didn't.

If you're into fly rods...you could check out the Sage Fli. I had one that was awesome for backcountry fishing trips. It was a 4 piece that packed nicely into my pack or strapped on the outside.

These are really nice rods I have the UL which I pack around, never looked at the price tag  it was a gift to me a couple of years ago. I combo it with a Okuma Avenger reel with 4lb test. Action is excellent and it weighs nothing in a pack. I actually put it in a small PVC pipe so it dosent break in my pack.
