Lake legal or not?
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:29:02 PM »
There is a lake that i've fished for bass and trout that has no development on it.  I was thinking of looking into some cast and blast opportunities there.  Spend some time duck hunting and mix things up with some fishing.

How do I find out it it is legal to hunt there?

I am sure that there is an easier way, but I would call the regional WDFW office in that area and they might be able to help.

I would suggest looking at it on the Go Hunt hunting map and determine what type of area it is. Such as DNR or WDFW wildlife refuge etc. Also if you search the WDFW website for the name of the lake sometimes they have a page of information on the lake and it will usually have a contact number for the office that represents the property. There may be better/easier ways but this is how I would try to determine if you can hunt there.

Yep! Found out what lands the lake is on and go from there.

The lake isn't listed anywhere I can find on there.  It is open year round for fishing, but can' t find any info on hunting.  Probalby not a great duck hunting lake anyway, but wanted to see what I can find out.

The local county sheriff might be able to shed some light on your lake.    I have hunted a few lakes north of you in my past when I was a wetsider.

I would just go ahead and hunt it since you say there is no development around the lake. There's no need to ask to hunt on public water.

just make sure it is public which in most instances if its on public land that would be the case.

and make sure its not in a firearm restriction zone ....there arent a ton of these but in high use areas that can be an issue and its almost always posted as such.

Thanks guys.  Public land and no development.  I think i'll  scout it out a bit and see if I spot any sign of duck hunters.   I think what I was looking for was the idea that hunting is allowed on public water unless otherwise posted.
