Sharpening Knives

I pretty much suck at it. I can't seem to put and edge on a knife that will last for more than a couple uses or get it shrap enough to shave with. I have a medium and fine grit Smith diamond stone but just cant seem to get an edge. Does anyone have any helpful tips on what I might be doing wrong or a youtube video they would suggest. I just gota benchmade for christmas and its already getting dull. I would like to be able to get it back to the point of being able to shave with it.

I think Smokepole on here in Stanwood does professional sharpening.

A good edge is all about matching the angle  of the blade. Knives need different bevels depending on style and brand. There is a really good sharpeing systme out there that has bevel guides and i can't rmber the name of it. That system works really well.

The worksharp sharpeners really are worth the money. I have never been able to sharpen a knife until I can shave hair with it, but I can now.

look into a Lansky kit. they take all the guess work out of it. for sharpening the old time way with your hands and stones get yourself a small see through protractor and a magic marker.  all purpose knives typically use a 20* edge, kitchen knives 25-30* and razors and such 35*+. 

use the protractor to get a fell for the angles and use the sharpie to blacken the edge of the knife to see how your working the blade, as you sharpen the ink will wear off showing you how your sharpening it. you want to get full coverage and even wear.

On the same lines as a "Worksharp" sharpener, I use a 1" belt sander like this for about $25 and take the guards off it and order some belts in the 240, 800, 1400, and 2000 grit and also a leather stropping belt and can get a VERY sharp knife with very little effort. They are beyond shaving with !!

Yup, I second that, I took my dull ol tomahawk and had it razor slice through paper sharp. Worth every cent.

I just throw one of these in my pack. Works great on my hunting and filet knives. It all I need for an edge that cuts hair, and it only takes 2 or 3 swipes.

I use a set of paper wheels.  One with diamond grit and the other with jewelers polish.  Just tune them up with a steel.

use a leather strop to finish the edge.  Often that is all you need to keep an edge.
