you can still buy the sabots and handload your own... my dad has been doing it with .308 and 30.06 as long as I can remember.

I don't believe they were banned.  Probably quit making them due to demand and a more difficult process with the use of automation.  You have to weigh the cost to profit scenario.  Used to use them on varmints all the time.

Urban legion claims they took it off the market because of the plastic wad, sabot would allow it to leave the weapon with out making riffling on the bullet. Perfect round for a bad guy.  Anyone have input on that thought?

I think it came off the market because of demand.  Varmint guys tend to like rifles that are really accurate.  Accelerator in my experience wasn't quite good enough for things like yotes and birds.  I just used a .223 or a .22-250 instead.

I did a custome build up with my guns smith to reload your own cannot find the actual report I did here but here is a link to one of the discussions

In short they don't work well because the rife twist and bullet weight don't match up you MAY beable to use a heavy 22 cal bullet but then you will slow the bullet down so you won't see the gains you are looking for.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

You might want to take a look at this site, they make custom sabots for rifle reloading.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I've been shooting sabot rounds from my 30 cal. rifles for some time.
I get the sabots from E. Arthur Brown, they are pretty cheap.
Out of a 30-06 you can push a 55 gr .224 flat base hollow point bullet about 4200 to 4600fps.
A couple of things, you have to get your rifle bore in an as new condition to have any accuracy, and you have to run a brush through the barrel after about 5-8 shots because the group really opens up. Plastic lay down.
Out of a 300 Win Mag you can push a bullet over 5000fps. They load real easy, use your standard dies, no special stuff needed.  :twocents:

The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

There is no "ban" they just were not accurate, did not sell, so are not made.

:yeah:

I found in my own experience that these rounds were crap for accuracy.
seriously got 6-8" groups at 100yards.
I bet people stopped buying them for this reason alone.

:yeah:
If there was any concern about the bullets not having rifling on them, they would also ban sabot shotgun rounds and probably muzzle loader sabots as well.
