Woohoo, first mink off (as in not on) my property.

So, second mink of the season, but the first one off of my property.  Looks like a smallish female.  Yeah, I'm helping save some bunnies and maybe a turkey chick or two.

I was going to pull this trap today as it has been out over a week (been checking it every day) and got this nice surprise.

My other trap was tripped first night out but the second door wire (closed) interfered with the open door falling fast/far enough for the lock to stick before the mink got out, nothing since then.

nice one, it will make a nice little half of somethn, idk maybe the start of a mink scarf or what do the fancy folks call it a shaul or somethn

Sweeeet ..last time I was working on San Juan I saw one packing a crab threw the yard ...it was funny to watch because the crab was bigger than the mink and the crab was pinching him on the face  It really was funny sheeeet !

Yeah, next year I'll be freezing some crab backs for bait, this year I'm using goose guts and duck carcasses.

Why would you think they are not native to the San Juans?  They do swim. They are on all the islands in SE AK and some of them would be just as much trouble to get to as Decateur Is.

I don't think anyone "brought" mink to the islands.  I tried running one over with my boat once between Decatur and Lopez, he was swimming just fine.  Someone did bring ferrets to San Juan I heard because of the excess rabbits, but I don't know if any of them are still there.  When we first came out, about eight years ago, there were craploads of rabbits and noone said a word about mink.  About four years ago people started seeing more mink and the rabbit population plummeted. 

I'd like more rabbits again, as I am sure they taste better than mink.  So, to Boss300, I don't think so.

  I think 'swim' is an understatement though.  Those suckers are so efficient in the water.  It's amazing to see them rocket around  when you get that rare change to see one; zipping around underwater like a miniature otter.

The Otter is the biggest member of the weasel family. Mink and wolverines are in it as well.
