Not certain on current rates, but my old man did a DIY hunt about 8 years ago with 2 buddies for 10 days in the Brooks Range. Came home with 2 caribou and a 65" moose. Cost them about $3800 a piece all said and done. I'm assuming that would be more like $6000 now. It's all pretty cheap except the float plane.

Are those draw tags?

There are a ton of over the counter tags you can purchase. Most 10 day float hunts you can expect to see a shooter moose in ten days not always. Buddy I work with who was a guide for 10 yrs prior to teaching does it every year and he's good and averages about 50%. He smacked a monster two yr ago that went 57" but was super thick and heavy and three wolves. Most people dont realize how big that really is. In AK for the most part you want to count brow tines not go off the 50" rule. Most untis are either 3 or 4 brows on one side. Last year three of them floated and only got two caribou. Minus the cost to get to AK and get your stuff home from here. We are going on a float fly in together in 2015 that will cost me total about $4,800. Plus the cost of our rafts and gear. That is 100% our own equipment. This will be a 11 day hunt. Not to talk anyone our of doing it but a person really needs to understand they may not see a legal animal the entire trip and if they do to quickly make it count.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

  • The trophy is in the hunt; the animal is a bonus!

I haven't tried for moose yet but their are some great rivers to float on the northslope for Caribou.  I'm hoping to try a moose hunt in the near future.

Biggest cost for me was driving up and back.  I wanted the meat.   Incredible trip.

Have done the float hunt 3 times. Drove up once and hunted out of Livengood. Other times I flew up and had the meat shipped back which is the way to go if you ask me.

I've kicked this around some as well.  Lots of variables.....  I would go with 3 and a willing camp cook (or someone just wanting to go) and plan to spend at least 4K each

I have been figuring the same trip for my family and it was about 4800 per person diy float trip. The bush plane is the biggest bill. theirs  6 of use going for 11 days.
