It was opening day 2006 in unit 113. I remember there being alot of optimism because the week before my dad and his buddy where deer hunting and scouting for elk when they seen this bad boy running up hill through some thickets. We got up at roughly 4 am that morning so we could get up the mountain before anyone else park at the spot where we wanted to be. At around 530 or so it started to get light so me, my dad, and 2 of our buddys set out to find this guy. Me and 1 guy went straight up and over this steep mountain where they had saw this bull run up while my dad and the other guy walked out the ditched off logging road we were parked on and went around the mountain that leads into a big steep saddle. There was about 8-10 inches of snow so it was ideal conditions. After a couple of hours hiking we met up on the other side in the saddle. We hadnt seen anything but knew they were there because I saw 3 or 4 beds that where melted in the snow. So we decide to split up and and try to cover some area. I decided to head down off this steep ridge where I had jumped 2 small bulls a couple years before that. While our buddies went their own ways my dad took another old logging road that went buck under the spot where he had seen that bull the week before. At about 830 as I am hiking down this steep ridge I hear a shot back behind me up the hill where we broke off to go our own ways. Immediately I think son of a gun someone got one. My dad ends up calling me on my phone like 3 mins. later. Son, I shot that big one. And I was like no way are you kidding me! Well I was kind of pissed because I was half way down this ridge and I had to hoof it back up to get to where he was. When I got up to where he shot this bull I looked at it and I was stunned! Just how big and how much mass he had. I was really excited for my dad. He proceeded to tell me that he actually walked out the wrong road. He wanted to be on the road that was about 400 yds. down the hill but didnt realize that he was on this one. Now as you walk down this road there is clear cuts above and below you so you can see quite a bit. But it comes to an end right up against some thick uncut stuff. So he said the hell with it I'll just walk this game trail that leads from where the road ended into the thickets. He walked about 20 yards from the end of the road when heard some thrashing and then noticed this bull standing right on the trail that he was on about 15 yards in front of him. The bull never even knew my dad was there because he was standing with his ass to him. The bull started to turn his head to look up the hill and my dad hit him right in the back of the neck with his .300 win mag and dropped him right where he stood. I told my dad you lucky *censored* I cant believe you walked right up on him. I tell you though we had our work cut out for us. After it as all said and done we didnt get the head and quarters out of there until 10 that night. If you're wondering it was a 7x6 with a 48in. spread and 12in. bases. He never had him officially scored but we greened him at 342.
