Arrows and 3d targets
« on: January 19, 2014, 03:44:08 PM »
Why is it so darn difficult to pull my arrows out of 3d targets? I'm not a weakling. These are Easton ST Axis arrows with the camo finish. Is it the texture of the camo on the arrows?
This picture is no exaggeration. I had to do this twice today to get arrows out and it's not just these targets.

You can rub a bar of ivory soap on them, or you can wipe them with a cloth saturated with silicon lube.

Does your dog shop at REI? :)

What speed does your bow shoot? It takes three people to get mine out this last shoot but with a bow that was only 15fps slower it was much easier. There are companies that make lube to put on the arrows that does help a lot.

My concern with putting anything on them is then I lose any chance I had of a grip on them.

You just put it on the first 6" or so of the arrow.  I was going to say the first 6" of the shaft, but that sounds pretty weird :o

I have Axis arrows with the camo, brutal to get them out of anything :bash: I learned to give them a little twist as I start to pull with my arrow puller and it helps a lot. They do get better once the camo starts to fade.

Just have a rag dipped in vegetable oil/olive oil and wipe around the end 8" of your arrow. Keep the rag by your targets and do that each time you pull them out. Helps prevent any foam burn too.

Twisting them to break the bond does make you think it's a good idea and help, but it's a great way to create a place for the arrow to break. That's the weak direction of the arrow because of the way they are made/wrapped/woven.  You'll put micro-cracks in the resin-to-carbon interface making a weak point.

Been doing this method for years with thousands of shots on the same range arrows with no problems, just throwing an idea out there.

I quit shooting axis arrows into my block targets because I thought they have too muck KE. I switched to flatlines which are lighter and don't seem to dig in too deep.

Yes it seems to help a little. I had the camo beman hunter pro and they stuck really bad then I tried my series 22 gold tips and the stuck just as bad. The aae tube made life easier but im pushing those arrow a little faster and its still not to easy.

Almost any arrow that has a camo finnish on it will be hard to pull from some targets. The heat that is generated makes the arrow stick. There is a product called woodys arrow lube. Just put it on the first four inches of the shaft.

Anybody use this stuff?

I like most everything from AAE, but when it comes to arrow lube Scorpion Venom is the stuff you want.  Just don't get it too far up on the arrow or you won't ever get enough grip to pull.  Stuff is wicked slickery.   A good paste car wax like Meguiar's also works well, but be careful as it will often remove the finish.

Camo carbon arrows are a bear no matter whose brand.  The heat created by penetration basically welds the target to the arrow.  Best thing to do if shooting 3-D's is to get non-camo shafts.  And even then it's best to get one without a coating.  They might wear out faster, but you won't herniate yourself pulling them.  Especially if your range has McKenzie targets.

ToddID is absolutely correct about the twisting thing.  Good way to ruin some arrows.  You might get away with it for a while, but eventually you will have a failure.  Hopefully you will notice it before it blows up during the shot.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Another option is change your field tips, I have found the sharper the tip, the harder to pull, but blunts will wreck your target (but great for stumps)

The camo finish sticks to the 3D foam. Try using RCBS resizing lube in a lube tube. I have been using it for years. I have not found any product that work as well. Twisting is ok if you are the one pulling your arrows. Be careful if someone else does it they can break them.

ANY kind of arrow lube really helps on older targets. I've tried several different brand and just  hotel sized bar soap, they all work.  You can buy an arrow puller OR you can take a flat kids rubber ball and cut a small patch, OR some of that non slip matting used for tool boxes/RV place mats.  :twocents:
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.
