Is the unit that you are wanting to hunt open to a general deer license tag holder?
Better yet, which elk unit are you wanting to save points for?

Phool, I'm not even referring to what elk unit. He says he is going to hunt deer and wants a point for elk.  You guys are advising him to put in for the combo tag to hunt his deer then get his elk point, im wondering if the unit he wants to hunt for deer is even open to a general deer tag?  He cant just put in for a general tag if the land he wants to hunt deer in is only open to limited entry.  If it is LE and wants to hunt it, he must put in for the LO permit.  The elk has nothing to do with what I am referring to.  If the deer hunting is open to the general tag, then yes, put in for a deer/elk combo, put down a tough unit for elk and take your point.

I will have to check and make sure but we were going to just but a landowner tag and hunt it that way. There was no draw for that.

As for what elk unit are we hoping to draw. We are going to cross that bridge after we get a few more points and also after my dad retires and I get more established in my job so that we can do it right.

Understood, but he is looking to build points for elk, you dont build points for elk unless its a bull permit somewhere. Also, you dont get your 80% back unless you first apply for a LE bull permit and get denied.

His buddies hunted the area for deer last year, I'm assuming he doesn't believe they can simply apply for the same area and be successful in the draw if it is a LE deer unit.

Most assume LO permits are given to anyone wanting to hunt a certain LO's land, thats not the case. :twocents:

Hopefully he's already figured that out, because a landowner tag does not get you any special abilities to hunt LE districts.  It is a different drawing, and limits you to hunting only the landowner's deeded land.

To clarify for you, a Landowner Sponsored tag is a different animal than most states.  It is a deer license that allows you to hunt deer only that land deeded to your sponsor.  If your sponsor has land in a LE permit district, you would still need the LE permit in order to hunt there, which he obviously would need to draw in the limited entry drawing process.

If he wants points for elk, the method I told him is the only way he can build them.  He cannot build them while he is applying for and hunting on Landowner Sponsored licenses.

I smell what you guys are stepping in now. I am 99% sure that the unit we were going to hunt is an OTC tag eligible since the guys we plan on going with hunted it last year without being drawn. The only drawing would be for a second either species doe tag.
