Bulls are singing
« on: August 29, 2007, 10:00:35 AM »
CRAP....Its early this year across the whole West.  Big bulls are already herding up the cows.  ITS WAY early and I have this 3rd season NM tag burning a whole in my pocket and these boys are already screamin a month ahead of me.  Washington bulls are screamin already too.  The  Clockum sounds like a warzone.  I guess the Indians didn't get them all.

I bet they all shut up in about a week when the arrows really start flying :dunno:  Always seems to be a flurry of activity right before the season. then nothing

I love hearing the big bulls scream. Nothing better than being up at the Clockum, sleeping at night and being woke up by the big boys.

Boneaddict I bet you are getting pretty excited for your NM hunt.

You know bone, it's almost like having the Raffle Elk tag, or Deer tag for that matter.  We all want one, your the only one with one, and we're all gonna be living through you and hopefully your pictures.  No pressure though.  :chuckle:

I was up in the Colockum this last weekend......I couldn't believe how much green I saw up there.  Things just seemed a little more lush to me than usual.  Them Bulls are definately starting to feel their oats.

I'm feelin' it.  I'll just pull a DMAN and claim I dropped my camera :chuckle:

or maybe the cat ate my memory card....except I don't have a cat.......

I'm nervous as hell.  I have enough camo to outfit an assualt on Osma..Gear is in a pile.   I haven't found the big one yet on my map.  I guess thats next.  Replaced my pump in our well, so should have water while I'm gone.  I was thinking about buying a new truck so that the old one doesn't die on the way down...knock on wood.  I updated the stickers on my window from moose to a screamin' bull elk, so my mojo would be right.  I have my kids concerned because see me with my diaphram calls and they are worried I'm going to choke to death (sometimes it sounds like it).  I just don't need to hear about how they are already grouped up and bugling hard and all being shot.  (THEre are two seasons before mine)

I understand where you're coming from, I'd rather hunt the beginning of the rut when the cows aren't in estrus and the big bulls aren't afraid to check out a new cow instead of stay with his harem...  And my shoulder isn't cooperating very well at all.... I'm just hoping I'll be able to pull my bow back AT ALL during my 2 week season... totally SUCKS!  Though I'm doing my damndest to get it ready, I just don't think it's gonna happen for opening weekend... I really wanted to get out this weekend and stick a buck in a really good area I found while scouting for bear but my shoulder aint letting it happen...

Good luck I applied for that hunt but pulled my app when I got news of the Idaho moose tag. Maybe one day I may be able to pick your brain on that too.  that is a top hunt you should have a great time.

Yes, its one of the best in the Gila.  Extremely hard to get drawn for.  Thanks High Country.  That is a positive way to look at it.

Bone,

I haven't been up there.  Most likely.   They tend to be at least a week earlier than the Ellensburg bunch, and about 2 weeks before the Yakima herd.

I hope they calm down and save some singing for the first week in October for my bull hunt.

When do the Yakima bulls start singing good?

Usually the best is around October first, or the last 5 days of September.

16A-16D all in the gila...the difference i think is specifically where and when.

All of 16 is in the Gila, maybe even some of 15.....they beak them up into subunits.  Different hunts at different times.  16D has three archery hunts in September.  Each are about 5 days.

I was up in the Rimrock unit scouting this weekend and there was no rutting activity that i saw. Every once in a while I would stop and let out a small bugle and I got one response back then nothing. I think the elk got pushed around a lot by the bow hunters. Maybe in a week they will settle down and start making noise again.

I only seen three cows that had a spike with them that was still in velvet.
