Will a .244 remington shoot modern 6mm rounds?
« on: January 22, 2014, 03:56:05 PM »
Neighbor has a .244 rem remington rifle and was wondering if it will shoot modern 6mm bullets.  I am not familiar with the .244 rem. so I don't want to assume.  I have found literature that says it will but just was wondering if anyone has insight beyond the internet.

Thanks

Johnny

6mm is .243.  244 Rem is probably .243.  Just like the 222 Rem, 223 Rem., and 222 Magnum all shoot .224 bullets.  Only in America!  :chuckle:

I think my wording was wrong......I know the bullet diameter is the same.   will the 6mm cartridge fit and fire in a .244 Remington rifle safely?  I think the answer is still yes.   Thanks

I suspect the .244 Remington has a 12 inch twist barrel.   It was later rebranded to the 6mm Remington and probably had the twist rate changed down to either 9 or 10 inch.

I also believe there was an attempt at the name changing to try and name it the 6mm Remington Magnum.  I can't find any evidence of that on the web via yahoo.

My newest Nosler manual (#7) says the 244 Remington was originally produced with a 1 in 12" twist.  When it was changed to the 6mm Remington, it was produced with a 1 in 9" twist.

That 12 twist barrel model was an intended varmint gun with light bullets in mind.........Im thinking anything over 80gr would not stabilize what so ever......

My book says the 244 was intended to shoot the 90 grain bullets, but would not stabilize the 100 grainers.  I have an old Speer reloading manual that lists both the 244 and the identical 6mm Remington cartridges, but I haven't had time to read what they say...  :dunno:

Says pretty much that.........

trouble stabilizing 100gr with the 12 twist so the newer 6mm rems were fit with 9 twist for the heavier bullets........to me, the 12 twist woulkd be relegated to dogs with 75gr hollow points, just like the one I had in 1975.

My old Speer Manual says they don't recommend shooting their 105 grain spitzers in the 244, because they don't stabilize.
In short, don't go over 90 grain bullets in the 244...
