Lockwood Viszlas
«
on:

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with Lockwood Vizslas? A co-worker had to put down one of her vizslas this week and while she is not looking to buy another one right now, she would like any feedback she can get on this breeder. She still has one female viszla so she is familiar with the breed but her dogs are house pets...they are not hunted over.

dont know anything about the lockwood breeders, but theres a couple in the omak/okanagon area that breed viszlas. my dad got his current viszla from them about a year ago and shes a great dog, very good hunting instincts (i know you said this would be a pet dog) and extremely well behaved inside

Why did she have to put the dog down? Has she contacted the breeder?

To clarify and answer your question, her dog was not from Lockwood. He lived a good long life ...would have been 14 years old in a couple of weeks. It is believed he had bladder cancer. A week or so ago he started having accidents in the house. They were hoping it was a urinary tract infection but then he stopped urinating but was constantly trying to go. Tried antibiotics but further urine testing indicated probable cancer.

Jim Divis in Brewster Wa has great Visalas and may be able to help. I have hunted behind his dogs and they are the best....

Disclaimer: I have no first hand experience with this breed.
However, I have seen multiple people say that a light touch is best with this breed. They don't take harsh correction well. Nothing wrong at all with that, just be warned.

Everything I have read or heard about Viszlas also indicates that a soft had is needed with these breeds. As stated, nothing wrong with that but it does require a certain type of person and training style it sounds like. The person I asked the question for has had 2 now so she is familiar with the breed but there are not a lot of breeders around. The one she still has was a rescue dog and the one that passed was 14 years ago so I am not sure that breeder is still around.
Joe, did you get yours from Lockwood or from the other breeder mentioned in this thread? Can you give some insight into your experience dealing with the breeder? Also, if you don't mind PMing me what you paid I would appreciate it.
