243 load data?
« on: January 26, 2014, 08:22:36 PM »
Hey guys I'm having trouble finding a good load to shoot out of my 243.  Could be just because its a cheap ruger American but i still think I can get close to 1 moa.  I want to to shoot an 87 gr H V-max but could try something else.  What powder and bullets do guys like and get to group well?

Remington 100gn Corelokt (no crimp)
COL 2.730" (but seat your bullet depth according to your chamber/magazine dimensions)
43.5gn of H4831
CCI 200 primer
Fireformed brass

Hornady 100gn boattail (no crimp)
COL 2.695" (but seat your bullet depth according to your chamber/magazine dimensions)
43.5gn of H4831
CCI 200 primer
Fireformed brass

Both shot well at ~2800fps from an H&R single shot my sons used to have. Work up to this load as it is approaching 'warm'. You won't likely find this load in any of the books. I don't recall the twist rate of the American, but the 95-100gn bullets usually perform well out of just about any factory 243 barrel.   Your mileage may vary.

I'm shooting the 87gr vmax with IMR 4350. Varget also works well  in my setup.

My hunting load is .243 Win using IMR 4320 pushing 100 grain Nosler Partitions, & CCI primers.  Below link should provide some good ideas where to begin.

Choose a bullet and put the appropriate charge of Varget behind it.

Thanks guys ill try these out.  I think I was going wrong with H 414 ill try varget or H4831 since I have both on hand.  Most likely will just kill coyotes.  If I do go after deer ill move to a 100gr bonded bullet.

Tag.  I was not happy with the accuracy of the factory ammo I bought for my wife's gun.  Maybe something here can do better.  Thanks for posting.

My wife shoots factory Winchester Super X 100 grain and it will out shoot anything I can load for it.  My first two shots at 300 yards were withing 1"....Luck??  Who knows...but I didn't shoot anymore after that.  Stopped while I was ahead.
