Hawken is DONE
« on: January 28, 2014, 03:51:00 PM »
A couple nights ago I blued the barrel and bedded the tang/trigger plate and a small section of the forward stock to prevent any side to side wiggle that may occur under recoil.

Then today I finished up all the stock work and applied the first coat of stain, this is one coat of Laurel mountain forge nut brown. It got a total of 4 coats nut brown and then for a SLIGHT reddish highlight, It will get 2 coats LMF Walnut stain. Finished off with low gloss tung oil. Shes going to be one heck of a good looker!

Looks sweet!  Did you also use the Laurel Mt Browning for the barrel?  I have a couple underhammer barrels that I need to brown and I hear the Laurel Mt stuff is good.  Any experience w/it?

Thanks,

ET

Yes LMF browning is some real good stuff! Add humidity to speed up process otherwise it can take a while to do.

I used birchwood casey perma blue gun paste, worked out excellent and left a rich blue/black finish. Followed up with 2 coats johnsons floor paste wax for protection.

Antiqued the brass with 2 coats of the bluing paste and then washed, dried and coating with brass black, washes again and LIGHTLY buffed with steel wool to get it the color I wanted.

Very Nice!  Time to get out and see how she shoots.  BTW, I think I will try the Laurel Mt Browning solution for my barrels.  I have a 50 cal 1/28 twist for sabots and a 62 cal w/Forsyth rifling for RB shooting in my underhammer.  Now I need to get busy so I can get out to the range too.

That looks real good. Thought about doing something like that to one of my shotguns before I pass it down to my 9yo.

Wow, that is beautiful!  Can't wait to see some paper from the range!  I'd love to do a project like that someday (and then bring some meat home with it!)

Awesome looking work.......

I hunted with a Hawken for about 20 years, until my wife bought me an inline and I went to the dark side....

Sometimes I miss that rifle.

Had to order a taller blade sight as the rear is calibrated for a .400" tall front sight. One minor thing I over looked  :o

Some newer pics I took the other day,

90gr Schuetzen with a .562" round ball didn't shoot that great with this powder but at least it reacts the same way my other twin of this rifle does! Huge comfort once I switched to a much tighter .575" ball with a .015" patch. Only 2 shots as I am out of the .575's now.

That looks GREAT!
I just picked up an old stock, CVA kit Hawkins.  Has both the 50 and 54 barrels.

How long did it take you to build it?

Just a couple weeks, The parts coming in took longer to arrive  :chuckle:
