Serious Front end issue
« on: January 29, 2014, 09:18:47 AM »
I have noticed that since I lifted my 97 s10 blazer that there is a slight clunk on the passenger side. I comes and goes but if you hit a bump or turn sharply at a higher speed you notice it. I assumed it was because my front end is out of alignment. I needed to replace my idler arm so I had the front jacked up and notice this, If you spin the passenger side tire it will spin almost 360 degrees but it stops. If you force it Thur the rough spot the whole differential and CV axle move up alittle and move toward the driver side a lot. Once you push through it clunks and is back to where it is supposed to be. I have had issues with the little inner shaft coming out of the differential with the CV axle when I had to replace the CV and when I was installing the lift kit. I dunno if that has anything to do with it and I am stumped. P.S. I hate I.F.S.

Is the axle hitting something as it turns due to the angle of it because of the lift? Assume it's a suspension lift? Are you saying the clunk you originally mentioned is because of the binding concern you mentioned? Ball joints go bad on those things a lot....especially if you're running big tires. That'll cause a clunk too, but not the bind you're talking about.

It is a suspension lift. The angles are factory because the lift came with a drop bracket for the differential. The axle isn't hitting anything. it appears to bind from inside the differantial. only 31" tires. Ball joints are all new and in good shape. I will tear into later but I am thinking I will pull out the inner shaft and install the CV back and see if it spins freely.

That binding condition is almost certainly a bad CV joint, pull the right axle and have a feel of the diff and wheel bearing but the fact that it pushes the diff over tells you that the joint is having difficulty flexing.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Ok thanks. I dismissed that it was a bad CV because the issue started right after I did the lift. Like on the test drive. I will look into it in a bit

Even with a diff drop kit you probably changed your suspension angles slightly, it doesn't take much for a CV with a bad spot in it to show off.
