Oregon heppner unit with outfitter
« on: June 07, 2012, 01:22:41 PM »
Wanted to get some input or hear about any past experiences down in the heppner unit. We are looking at a deal that is a DIY archery hunt on a private ranch. Trying to decide if it's worth the cost of the fee plus tags.
Thanks fellas.

Are you looking for deer or elk? That might help some people give ya some feedback. I had been putting in for some tags in oregon but once the licenses and tags jumped I decided the few points I had in oregon was not worth it.

General area of the unit? Our ranch is on the east edge of Heppner, other half is in Ukiah.

I've talked with him too. It sounded like a good hunt but i have no idea if it is or not.

Seems like a great price for a 7 day hunt.  Evidentally he only allows four guys per week in the area.  5000 acres is a lot of land to cover.
I'm torn, can't decide if I want to do it.

I can't speak for down there. Our hunting is up towards Battle Mtn and in the foothills. What people may see as a problem is the lack of bigger bulls. But I attribute that to the fact that a lot of elk get killed every year as well, at least in our area, mostly because it's all private and they get chased around a lot and into open country. I usually pull a cow tag anyways, but we kill bulls every year in the first rifle season, and during spike season as well.

Good luck, good country down there.

See if the outfitter will let you run down and check out the ranch before you book it. 5,000 acres is a nice chunk but how much of it is elk country? Are you booking out all 4 hunters as your group? I would be a little worried about not knowing the other hunters in the group and if they are goobers, running the elk off the ranch.

yea it would be four of us in our group.  Not sure I'm ready to spend that kind of dough for a Oregon hunt.  Save my $ and go to Idaho or Wyoming next year.

Hi Griz,

Did you end up booking this hunt? I'm talking with the same outfitter for the same hunt. Curious if you went. Thanks.

No I didn't. Maybe next year. Just too much going on right now.

Hepner is one of the units odfw has been doing aggressive predator control. The results have been very positive for elk numbers. That being said the unit gets and has since Oregon went to limited.entry hunts a lot of pressure. A good bull for the unit would be a.300. If you just want an elk and you have reasonable access to private land my guess is you'll find one to shoot. I have a couple of.friends in the area who have access and they always get an elk.
I don't know your outfitter, can't help you there.
