Oregon applications?
« on: January 30, 2014, 09:07:35 AM »
Applied in Oregon this year for bear and elk. My buddy knows the sled springs unit really well and has done good for both there. Just wondering if anybody here has hunted it before and if you had any success?

I hunted it hard in 2012. What do you want to know?
The bear tag should be a good one!!

I have called for a friend during bow season.  I thought the unit was pretty tough hunting.  We mt. Biked in on timber propperty and hunted national forest.  The national forest actually was better hunting for us.  If I had to do it again I would concentrate on the breaks of the grande rhonde or toward the snake.  He shot both a bear and a cougar during this hunt if that helps give u an idea of the unit.  Biologist says they manage for 10 bulls per 100 cows.

Concentrated. 3 days, 2 bears, no elk.

OH i was just wondering how people have done in there? A buddy of mine lives in Oregon and packs into the country with horses. He has done well in there and talked me into applying for bear and elk this year. Just wanting to see if other people have had success in the unit.

I had a client that hunted Sled Sprngs several times in the past archery elk and said it was a fun hunt with good numbers but you dont plan on being picky and a 300 bull is pretty good. I have considered it but I have way more points than needed for that unit and hate to waste the points I have built up but the more the points creep grows for the top 3 units down there it may change my mind. A fun hunt where I could shoot a 300 bull with my bow might be better than waiting another 5-10 years to draw a MT Emily tag that I could still eat tag soup on! Tough decisions in this points game we all play!!

My buddy said the same thing, he sees lots of elk and if you work hard enough there are some big bulls to be found in the unit. I am more just into seeing new country and possibly getting some meat for the freezer. If I do not draw a tag for a couple years I will get more serious about applying in one of the tougher units.

It takes a fair amount of points for sled sprngs even to draw. I think archery as a nonres is 7 points this year. Oregon is very nonres friendly but they sure like to get our money wish I had never started back when it costed $50 to apply now its three times that!!
