Green Mountain barrels 6.5 WSM.
« on: January 28, 2014, 08:54:41 PM »
I've been helping a new member here "Hot Rod Willy" with a wildcat build, his first wildcat. He first was entertaining the thought of a 6.5 SAUM. After a little more discussion he decided on a 6.5 WSM also known as the 6.5-270 WSM or the 6.5-300 WSM. The rifle was built on a Rem700 action with a Green Mountain F34 contour, 9 twist. Basically a 26" sporter weight. The thing to keep in mind here is this is a 92.00 barrel blank through Midway. He sent it of to a guy I suggested in Idaho. That chambered, threaded, crowned and fit the barrel. Along with lapping the lugs for a 175.00. He had the barreled action back in about two weeks.

Brass was necked down once fired stuff I gave him, loaded up some for the barrel brake in. He mounted a 3x9 scope just to get him by until his Leupold 8.5-25 arrived, which it did today. Off to the range, I was more than IMPRESSED! with the rifle, I already know the kid can shoot!

92.00 barrel
175.00 chamber and fit

I personally witnessed that rifle shoot group after group under half inch, his largest group going .514 @ 100 yards. I don't know about the rest of you but I have spent a bunch more for rifles to shooting like that consistanly  with everything from 100gr Partitions to 140gr Accubonds like I watched his rifle do and not too shabby trigger work I might add(Factory Remington trigger/stock) Here's his best group of the day in the mid .3's ( Pic bellow) He was pleased and I just sat and smiled because I knew when I got home I was ordering the same barrel in a varmint contour for a future project and the fact that sometimes things just come together without the average Rem700 custom barrel job and action work for 1000.00 plus. It should make a great Mulie/Elk rifle.

Off course he had some extras done. A muzzle brake and the barreled action bead blasted and matte blued. Fitted it to a Rem700 BDL stock along with Wyatt's bottom metal and detachable mags. I'll get pics when the scope is mounted and it's all back together. He's definitely been bitten, he's already looking towards his next build.
