What do you think about the Ruger SR22?
« on: January 31, 2014, 06:44:57 PM »
Thinking about buying one, mostly for inexpensive shooting practice as a pistol beginner.  My research seems to point to it being a pretty good gun, reliable and easy take down for cleaning.  What say you?

Does it matter whether the .22 I buy for practice is a significantly different style of pistol than the larger caliber I end up buying to carry?

I have sold a lot of the Sr22 if I could afford to buy my own I would. Everyone I sold one to absolutely loves it! No one has ever come back with any problems or misfires, one customer even told us he use 60 yr old .22 ammo and did not have a single misfire or any problem whatsoever!!! If you do end up getting it I am super jealous! Oh and yes they are.easy to take down, you can take it apart in less then 30 secs!!

I bought one for my fiancee about a year ago and we both really like it. I have always had very good luck with ruger products so i wasn't shy about this one.The fact that is has interchangeable grips a fixed barrel and adjustable sights made it pretty much sell it self. After shooting it the first few times my impression was this is a fun accurate and reliable (i break in all my 22lr semi auto's with a hundred rounds of stingers first) 22 plinker but certainly does not hold a candle to my ruger mkII 5.5in bull barrel 22-45.

I love my sr22. I had a Sig Mosquito before and it was super picky about the ammo I fed it. My ruger has been flawless with various ammo including CCI subsonic. Its accurate and about the same size as my XD-S.

Ok ,I'm about to pull the trigger on my purchase of the SR22.  I'm looking at getting a laser sight with it and I'm finding the combination in the "Talo special edition" but I'm trying to figure out exactly what that means.  It looks like this Talo company does a lot of (mostly cosmetic) custom work on various firearms and marks them up.  In this case I can't tell whether the "Talo special edition" is simply the addition of the laser or something else.  Anyone have any idea? :dunno:

.  Its just the addition of the laser, they also have a purple framed Talo edition. Talo does nothing to the internals its all for looks.

Not trying to jack the thread, but there are a lot of comments on the SR22 as a decent plinker.  I have a S&W 22A and I think they run about $250 new (they were below $200 when I bought mine).  I have never had issues with it (other than the painted surface that comes off if you use Hoppes 9).  It was accurate out of the box and has been a great one for me and eats anything I put through it.  Anyone had issues with these?

Did you buy it?  I love mine.  Wife loves it too.  Great lightweight gun, easy to shoot, never failed on a round yet.  I like ruger guns too, so I'm biased.

Yes sir.  Found a deal I couldn't pass up.  New for $393.80 (including an attached laser) from the Cheaper Than Dirt website so I pulled the trigger a couple days ago.  Pretty excited to get it and hoping I can find some .22 ammo on the shelf one of these days so I don't run out of my supply too quickly.

Good for you. I got mine at sportsmans warehouse in federal way. I didn't get the laser model though. Btw, usually on Tuesday they have 22.  I've also picked up CCI at Walmart off 348 and at the supermall, whoops the whatever you call it mall walmart in auburn. 333 block for 25, Remington. CCI was 50 block for 17.

I think they are a great .22, great price at around 300 bucks. I bought it as my stash in the pack plinker while hunting. It shoots so nice, has such good ergonomics that I use it as a carry gun sometimes. (Pro's and con's to using a .22 as a carry gun). Like a lot of folks, I compared it with the Walther, read a lot of reviews. Very happy I picked the Ruger. Now, I do get tempted by the 1911 style .22's that are out but they are a touch large for putting in a pack or pocket. I still regret selling my bull barrel Ruger target pistol but again, too large. If I really need large handgun I have some other choices in the gunsafe.

It was delivered today so I went down to fill out paperwork and pick it up, but whatever number they have to call for the background check was down, so I have to go back and try again tomorrow. :bash:

You will love it.  It's Ruger's version of the Walther P-22, (which I have), with Ruger's improvements.  I love my P-22.  If the Ruger was available at the time, that's what I'd have.  Actually, I'm on my second P-22.  My buddy's son fell in love with my first one, so I sold it to him, and got another one.  Hi-Viz makes a fiber optic front sight for them, and is much nicer than the front sight that comes on them.  :twocents:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

I'm hearing that .22 ammo is starting to appear a little more.  Are you guys getting any 500 count bricks?  What kind of price are you seeing?

I picked up the Blazer 500 brick from Cabelas last week for $23.99.  Still nothing sitting on any shelves.  People are buying it up as fast as it touches down.
