Yes, you do need a hunting license to apply. To apply for any special permits you always need the hunting license first, with the exception of moose, sheep, and mountain goat.

You could do as campmeat did and only purchase the bear hunting license, but you might as well get the entire package- deer, elk, bear, and cougar. It's cheaper to buy it that way.

As for GMU's, I would just apply for the ones closest to you. There are a couple up north, those would probably be as good a choice as any. Units in the NE and the Blue Mts can be good too, but a much further drive. All depends on how much time and money you have. Chances are without points you're not going to draw anyway, but you'll be gaining a point which will help in next year's draw.

So yeah, to expand on Timberstalker's post, he's right, you really don't buy a "hunting license." But it's just semantics. You buy a tag. Then you buy an application and apply for a special permit.

Often people talk about applying for tags. You don't apply for tags, you buy them.

You also don't buy special permits, as people often say. You buy the application. You draw special permits.

Ok so at this point then it sounds like choosing GMU's are going to be the most complicated now.

I'm not to get into it with you know-it-all hunters.

What does a Game Warden ask for when he checks you, a HUNTING license.

You guys can argue all day, because I guess that's what you guys like to do. Have fun......... :)
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Campmeat,

I'm not arguing; I am simply trying to help the OP understand the process. There was poor information given that's all.
If you aint hunting, you aint livin'

Not arguing, just trying to be sure people realize they DO have to buy a hunting license, or bear tag, if that's what you choose to call it, before they apply for a special permit.

Now you just said a game warden would ask for your hunting license. What are you going to show him when you're on your bear hunt? Your bear tag, right? So that is your license.

As I said, simply semantics. Whatever you choose to call it, you buy it before applying for the spring bear hunts.

Yep. Semantics. License/tag is used interchangeably and used to mean something when you had to buy a license before buying a tag.

Yes, you do need a hunting license to apply. To apply for any special permits you always need the hunting license first, with the exception of moose, sheep, and mountain goat.

+1 one on saving money. Buy the package and get it over with. At least that way you don't have to keep track of the most current "License".

I'm not blaming anyone specific about arguing. But, this happens every time when something isn't spelled out perfectly by some members. If some one can't figure it out without others being so precise and butting in, it's irritating. Things are so simple, then it turns into a peeing match.

I think the quote below is what caused the initial confusion. Regardless of semantics, you do need a 2014 hunting license whether you call it a hunting license or bear license.

You don't need to buy a 2014 hunting license to apply for bear. Other animals, yes.

The common denominator is that we are all trying to help.

Agree.  It is like some just like to create issue when the intent of the subject they are trying to manipulate is so obvious.  It is most definitely a form of passive aggression and they think they are being so sly.  It is a game and perhaps not a bad one as this is what they get out of this forum for enjoyment.
It's a TIKKA thing..., you may not understand.
