Anyone ever fish for Lake Trout(Makinaw)
« on: February 07, 2014, 11:46:42 AM »
I've been thinking about fishing with Darrell and Dad's over at Lake Chelan sometime. Has anybody done it before? Here is their latest report. I'll bet it's cold.

Skillet has......

I've followed D&D's reports for awhile. They look like they have it really dialed in. I've thought about a day trip when heading over east for deer hunting. Do a day trip and have them pack and freeze the catch, pick it back up on the way home. Could be good times.

Yep, I done it a little.  Great fun.  You can jig them or troll them up.  Trolling a lot more productive, not nearly as much fun.  In one weekend can hook yourself up with a year's worth of crab bait.  There are some excellent eaters in there in the 3-6# range that feed primarily on the mysis shrimp.  Deep red filets.  Others eat what most lakers eat - other fish.  They tend ot have the pale, really oily flesh that is the bomb for crabbin.  I've put these pics up here before I think, but WTH - H20 cracked it open for me and I think they're worth seeing again.

This is what your 3/4oz jig looks like going to a pile of lakers on the bottom.  No current, so as long as the wind isn't bad you can jig really light gear deep.

One of the nice fleshed fish-

This one was crab bait:

This time of year is big-fish time, but you'll be fishing much deeper.  Up to about 350 ft in the Missouri bay / Yacht Club / Narrows areas.

If you  really want to do it, I'd let you buy me a frosty beverage and we can talk gear and tactics.  I went for a few years before I finally broke down and hired a guide to help me put together the last pieces of the puzzle.  Wish  I would have done it in the very beginning!

I'd be game for that trip.

I fished with D&D one time, even parked my boat at his house and fished the lake on my own the next day. Was worth the money to learn how to fish the lake. For a few year we would pull the travel trailer up the and leave it for the month of March, can't remember of the top of my head, but the RV park would give a good discount in the off season. We would leave the jet boat there also.

As mentioned earlier, plan to fish deep, I don't think we fished less than 120'.  We also caught a few chinook in about 300'-350' in the narrows.

Big d is right.  I have manual downriggers, so I only fish with "crew" on chelan in the winter :chuckle:

Right now is your best chance for a 20#+ fish.  We going to do a trip? Maybe get a couple of boats over for some friendly competition?

Make some time man!  Ripper, H20, Skillet and the Phool could do some damage over a weekend.  Ive been in Mark the Rippers fish killing machine - that thing is no joke.  I do ok myself on Chelan.  Plus there is no limit on the lakers - where else do you get to have the chance to catch monster fish with almost no restrictions?  Im getting stoked just thinking about it.  Does the weekend of Feb 22-23 sound good to anybody?

We may be up for that weekend. Rippette and I are sitting here discussing it. I have the electric DR's, no cranking for me, rods and reels, flashers........I dont know  what you use for baits, lures. We will have to talk about it. Lets do that tomorrow.
