People delay medical treatment for heart attacks. Don't ignore those symptoms either!

Prayers for the family...

Could it have been H1N1.  I've heard of a couple deaths lately. So sorry for you his wife and kids. What a way to go.  I just got home from the hospital from a hernia operation, so I'm making sure I walk around so as to not get sick.

Sorry for your loss my friend... and I will second what you say... the flu is going around and it is leading to pneumonia in many cases...even in young people... I came down with it and so did two other people at my work (all had the flu shot)....go in at the early signs of flu and they will give you tamiflu...if you wait more than a day or two this will not be effective.
I had the flu a couple weeks ago and when I first came down with it I had my wife call and ask about Tamiflu. They said to just stay home and ride it out. Not worth going in for. They didn't sound too impressed with that drug.

It's not 100% for sure.

I'm sorry for your loss. I recently got out of the hospital, I went through a ruptured appendix surgery. The surgeon said he estimated that I had gone about a week that way, and he also said I was lucky to be alive.

Sorry for you're loss, I couldn't imagine.
I couldn't agree more about not waiting! Back in '05 I went in to the doc (after weeks of "toughing it out"). I had trouble breathing and was coughing up blood. They did some xrays and other scans and then diagnosed me with stage 4 testicular cancer that had spread throughout my body (I was 23 at the time). My doc said that had I not got in for surgery and treatment right then...he gave me 1 week to live.
Its been 9 years now and Im clear and healthy, thanks to the Lord and friends and family.
No joke...nobody is going to think you're a baby because you go to the doc. If they do, they're no friend of yours.

Prayers sent!

Sorry for the loss (s) on this thread. It is so sad to hear of healthy people leaving the living so early. The sicknesses going around are nothing to mess with, spend a few extra minutes on hygiene and eating right and getting good exercise as well.

Same thing happened to my oldest brother the Sunday before Christmas. Got the call on that Friday saying he was being flown to Missoula MT on life flight. I guess he hadn't been feeling to well for a week or so and didn't go see the doc until it was too late. He had Pneumonia and his body couldn't fight it off, now his is gone.

Sorry for your loss deerhunter and wence5.

Hopefully this thread will help some fellow members on here.

I am one that doesn't go see the doc like I probably should.  It usually takes some severe hounding by my wife before she gets me to go.

My problem is that it seems everytime I've gone to the doc, they never know what is wrong.  They will usually say something like "it just has to run its course".  A couple of times I've gone, they've said something like "so why did you even come in?"

I think it is hard for us to know when the right time is to go in.  Whenever I've been sick, the docs have never been able to tell what it is and almost never do anything to make me better.  So, the last time I went to the doc, probably 6 months ago, I told my wife it was the last time I was going to go see the doc.

After reading these stories on here, I guess I'll rethink my attitude a little bit re: doctors and I guess I'll still go see them when it seems right.  But I tell you, it sure seems like a big guessing game when it comes to medicine.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

If its a cold or a flu, then yes it needs to run its course.

If you have extreme symptoms that could be indicative of an end-of-life sort of emergency, then you need to go NOW. Not tomorrow... not this evening... NOW.

Examples:
  • You fall and hit your head. You're shaken and embarrassed in front of your friends, but shake it off and get back to it. Some time later you have an onset of the worst headache in your life. You could be experiencing an epidural hemitoma and death is nocking at your door. You're already behind the game at this point and immediate surgery is needed to survive.
  • You experience confusion, dizzyness, and loss of coordination for an hour and then it goes away. you are happy. What this could be is a transient ischemic attack and a warning that a stroke, the big one, is right around the corner. Going to the ER  to identify this could make the difference between having the big  stroke and not.
  • You have nausea, shortness of breath, and numbness in your jaw. Even though you don't have pain in your chest, this could still be a heart attack. I've been around a few "AMIs" as they're called and the number one symptom I will recount is denial. Nobody wants to be embarrassed by a visit from the paramedics at your Superbowl party, but putting off help for a few hours could leave your heart scarred and significantly shorten your lifespan.

Healthcare was in a sad state before Generalissimo Obama sunk his fangs into it and now its even worse. But its still one of the best health care systems in the world. Better to have a few wasted trips to the hospital when not sure than to be dead and leave a family behind 30 years too early.  :twocents:

It is kind of a lose-lose... when I went in with my pneumonia they looked at me like I was stupid for not coming in four days prior when I first started feeling the slightest of flu symptoms..... yet I am sure if I would have went in when I first started feeling sick they would have still looked at me like "why the heck would you come in when you just started feeling a little sick"... That being said.. it seems like they are now taking this years flu symptoms very serious in the young and old due to how dangerous this virus has been..... take care guys.
