Pasayten backcountry hunt
« on: April 21, 2011, 03:58:52 PM »
I'm thinking about backpacking in to the Pasayten this fall to hunt, and was wondering about access into the east side of the Wilderness.  I'm looking at the Irongate, Chewuch or Andrews Creek trailheads, and was wondering if any of these were less used by the outfitters than others.  I'm trying to avoid heavy outfitter traffic if I can.  My standards for the hunt aren't too high, I'm just going to enjoy the scenery and have fun looking for a legal deer.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Don't use a trailhead then. ;)

Get good trail maps of area and find areas that dont have trail access and also terrain that would not permit travel by horse due to terrain. Another thing I have done is I have used well used trailheads for abit to get me to an area I wanted to head off trail and over a ridge and away from hunters.

I went Hunting in this area and used the Irongate trail. There weren't too many hunters in this area but we did run into a few hikers doing the cross country thing, over nights stays. The trail was a well maintained trail, probably hiked a lot during the summer months, elevation gets close to 7200ft towards Sunny pass...

Popular spot don't expect to be the only one there. All depends on how far back and off the trail you will be.

The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

Start at the Iron Gate and head off trail once you get into the area you like.  Darwood used Andrews Creek and Chewuch.   I would stay as far notheast in the Pasayten as you can get.  Good Luck.

Check into Good Enough Peak area around Smith Lake. A good area also if you hike into Horseshoe Basin and take off to the Canadian Lakes you can hunt the edge of the burn from years ago, it can be quite good...... :twocents:
Check the areas out that I am talking about when looking at your maps around Irongate trailhead....

Find a steep, nasty area with little attractions for hikers, etc.  If a trail goes a few miles in and then climbs 2000' abruptly, it cuts out 75% of the population.  That has been my experience in other areas. :twocents:
