6.4L / 6.7L Powerstroke motors ( any problems)

I'm looking for a 2010-2013 F350 with a power stroke. Are there any major problems with them like the 6.0L. Thanks Allen

the 6.4 ails from many of the same issues that the 6.0 had, a much better choice then the 6.0, but still not without its own set of hiccups.

from everything I have heard, the 6.7 is a monster though. I would prefer the 6.7, better power, better fuel economy, even quieter then the 6.4. both are pretty solid choices when compared to the 6.0 though.

I ran a 2010 F350 with the 6.4 for four years and hated that truck.  It got 13 MPG empty , driving slow and under 10 MPG pulling my 16 ft enclosed work trailer.  Plus it blew smoke every time it cleaned the exhaust filter.  We traded it in and got a 2014  F350 with the 6.7 and what a world of difference.  18.2 MPG empty  and 14 pulling trailer over passes / winter driving so far. Over 30% better mileage.  I would not recommend the 6.4 for sure, from my experience.

6.4L's get crummy fuel mpg's and they have the same EGR cooler issues as 6.0L's do. They're a little easier to fix but they're still not cheap. The only thing you've got going for you is the 5year 100k mile diesel engine warranty they have. You'll still have a little warranty left on a '10. Like everyone else, I'd go with a 6.7 in a heartbeat if it came down to that. I'm surrounded by these trucks 10 hours a day.

My father has a '12 6.7L powerstroke and loves it..avgs 19 mpgs hand calculated still owns his '00 7.3L also. I Know of a guy that has a 6.4L and just heard he's doing his 3rd major motor repair on it..unsure of all his issues but it sounds like I would stay away! I've only owned a 7.3L powerstroke and a 5.9 cummins and loved them both. You didn't state how often you will be towing or what not but in my opinion owning a diesel is truly only worth it if you tow heavy loads moderately or on a regular basis. I recently gave up my cummins because i just wasn't towing often enough to justify owning one. Just my 2 cents..good luck on your choice!

RUN FROM THE 6.0 .I had a 2006. I put an average of 10K in it a year to keep it running. I traded it in at 80,000 miles for a 6.7. WOW. I bought a F450 with a 430 Gear Ratio. My total load is 38,000 lbs. You do not know it is back there. I also pull a 7500 lb trailer with 10,000 lbs of hay on it also. I can excelerate all the way to the top of the pass. I only touch my brakes once or twice all the way down the other side. With a 430 Gear ratio I average 17.1 MPG. What a work horse. We love it so much we bought 2 more. The other 2 are F350's, not dually's ,they average 22-24 mpg on the highway. You could not give me a 6.0 or a 6.4

  To sum it up we have three new ones. I am at 40,000miles on my F450. Not a single hickup. I drive it everyday. It is the nicest vehicle I have ever driven. I let my Acura MDX sit to drive the truck.

I don't have one personally, but my boss has has a f350 king ranch w/6.7, avg 18 mpg and has a 100k miles on it with no major repairs other than routine maintenance.

You guys have confirmed everything I have read on diesel forums that the 6.7 is the way to go. Just wanted an unbias opinion. All the forums i found were sponsored by ford ? Kind of like a big ford commercial. Honestly won't be doing a huge amount of towing, just towing my 18' car trailer with the Jeep 4-5 times a year, and the trailer and a tractor 2-3 . Eventually were getting a camper so the diesel would be nice.
Anyone that thinks a Glock is better than a 1911 paints his toenails.

I would just get a 5.9 cummins then :twocents: not very hard to fix, everything can be repaired with hand tools for the most part. and being a inline 6 cylinder you get great gas mileage and have something like 75% less moving parts compared to a v8 diesel engine. Less moving parts equals less heat and less parts to fail.

My guy in the shop here who does the majority of our diesel work has had the cabs off of Super Duty's 19 times in the last 12 months. He's got pictures of every one....
The same things that go wrong with the rest of the Dodge trucks go wrong with the Ford trucks too.. Ball joints, etc. The 5.9L Cummins is a much better engine than either Ford's 6.4 or 6.0. If Dodge made a truck with 4 real doors and a 5.9L other than a megacab I'd buy it. Trying to find a Megacab in that configuration is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The early 6.7L Cummins were junk too because of all the emissions crap they had to put on them. Once they got those figured out, they're doing well too. I'm of the opinion, based on several years experience in the Dodge truck service arena and now a year with Ford, that Dodges are a lot cheaper to maintain when comparing diesel engines. Comparing the rest of the truck, they both need repairs. I'd almost think there's very little difference in the 2. I'd buy an '05-06 Chevy with a Duramax in a heartbeat.

I thought about a newer Dodge with the Cummins but after driving my works 2012 3500 around town most of the day Friday I wasn't real impressed. The turbo lag was horrible. I drove my bosses 2014 6.7L around Thursday and there's no lag when you get into it. Haven't ruled out a duramax  yet either still in the reaserch phase.

The older ones are better.  Lose the emissions crap and the new ones are much better.  My engine breathes clean and farts dirty.  Perfect and lots power. New cummins 6.7 is absolute beast without emissions and with good tune!  :twocents:

Powerstroke has 2 turbo's.  One that works off of low rpm which is why you don't feel the lag.

Right. The front ends still suck but so do the Fords. There's a solid front axle trend there. Some love them but they sure do eat up parts.

03 and up Dodge auto's are leaps and bounds ahead of the previous ones. The new 6 speed auto is even better but it only comes with the 6.7 Cummins. In my opinion the 6.7 Cummins is a great engine especially after you rip off all the emissions crap . Put gauges and a good programmer on any Cummins and you'll say LAG..... what lag, even on the lowest settings. Jackelpe is right on about the Dodge and Ford front axles they all kill ball joints, axle u joints, and unit bearings.

Powerstroke has 2 turbo's.  One that works off of low rpm which is why you don't feel the lag.

The 6.4l powerstrokes have the compound turbo setup while the 6.7's have a single turbo with a variable geometry exhaust side and 2 compressor wheels and housings for the charge air side.  Here is a link for the 6.7s setup pretty cool but looks very expensive to replace! http://www.internationalpowerstroke.com/sst.html
