Caught another nice tom today, small beaver.
There is truth to waiting until the late season IMO. It's breeding season and the toms are moving. No time to hunt so they are hungry too.

Here's something to try. Nice big piece of beaver in the trap, smaller one outside. Give them a taste! If the small piece gets eaten do not replace it. Make them go in the trap for seconds.

Another thing fresh is not as good as stinky. Two week old beaver is easier for them to find your set especially if you have a piece outside. The wind blows the smell around. Kind of a long distance call.

Then set a bunch of civet traps in the area to lure them in..

Doesn't any bait outside the trap have to be 30 feet away or further? I got a ticket last year for having a goose carcass hanging 15 foot from my trap as an attractor. Where would you recommend putting the extra piece of beaver?

Not if it is covered. I should have been a little clearer. I  hide the bait ouside the trap with evergreen boughs. Wind can still blow through it and spread the smell around but not visible to flying raptors. That being said a bait 30 feet from the trap up in a tree, the cat will find your trap if it gets that close.

You are right though a sight bait that close would be illegal

One other thing if that goose was domestic I think you got screwed. I read that to be legal although I still would not recomend it.

The goose was wild. I still think we got screwed. It was tied to a small about half way up for that very reason..cover. He saw it as "visible to flying raptors." Do you know why a feather blowing in the wind is not considered a non edible part of a game animal. Also, blood for that matter..?

Why would it matter with a cage trap anyways.  I can understand with a leghold, but a cage trap, so what, open the door and fly away, if they even went in.

It could be emotionally damaging to the poor bird. Ha! It's washington..who knows?

Letter of the law and all that. Things have changed but the wording of the law has not.

  Are you really driving around in the mountains in the landscape photos, did not think that was possible in Washington state with all logging roads gated  up north here every road is gated,we'll let me make that clearer, EVERY ROAD IS GATED.

Bruce, are you using Co2 without a cap over the trap? If so that is why you are having problems with it. You need an end cap for that size pvc pipe with a hose attachment in the center of it. It doesn't have to be super tight just enough to keep most of the co2 in the trap.
