FMJ's?
« on: November 18, 2008, 10:36:40 AM »
Just curious if you think it would be a bad idea to use a 30-06 FMJ on a coyote???  Or is it even legal?   :dunno:

I dont like FMJ for two resons, 1 they ricochet far more, 2 they dont kill as clean ,and I hate hearing dogs screaming in pain. I try to make my dog kills as I would any other animal, no suffering. If your trying to save pelts get a new gun for your dog hunts. 223 cals are pretty cheap to shoot and the bullet selection is huge. right now Im shooting hand loads, 60 grain speer flat base hollow point varmit bullets, no exit hole and they go down like they were hit by a train if I do my part on shoot placement. hope this helps and hey it gives you a reson to buy another GUN. :chuckle: :chuckle:

i shot one with a fmj from my .223 right through both shoulders, and it knocked it on its ass, then it got up and ran 20 yards to where i found it. only a pin hole in and pin hole out. i just got done sighting in and wasn't planning on shooting a yote, it was just there.

I have never seen a Fmj do that great on a coyote unless it was a spine shot or head shot. I wouldn't ever use them, I have shot a few coyotes with my 338 and with a 180gr BT bullet it made a big hole coming out, I want to try some ab on them to see if they will hold together better and not blow up. :dunno: I have used a few different bullets out of my .223 and the 45gr jhp rem ammo seems to be a good fur round but the 40gr v max can make a nasty hole if you don't hit them broad side. I shot one in the chest at 40yd's with one and it had a bigger hole in it then the 338 left, the entrance and exit holes where about soccer ball size :yike:.

I used 30-06 125 corelokt for all my dogs yrs ago headshots only works great,if ya stray to far to one side you will be sewing the pelt.I used the same on all the mulies also.I met a guy who used a .17 fmj he dumped them dogs he was a hell a good shot.
