blacktail
« on: February 17, 2014, 01:14:02 PM »
just getting into the hole trail camera thing. Bought the Simmons whitetail cam from sportsmans warehouse. And a salt lick and a bag of feed.  Should I find a trail and put it on or find a trail and make my own little area off the trail sence I dont want anyone to find it. Im new so I would appreciate any help. Thanks

It all depends really. I have tried mineral stuff and other types of feed and had no luck. I think it depends on the area and if there is a lot of natural feed near by and such. To get started I would suggest covering some ground and try to find a good place on a trail that seems to get some animal traffic and put it up. Dont expect a miracle overnight though. Give it some time. If not much shows up, move the cam. If you can find some kind of funnel or pinch point that would be a good place to start. Be careful about placement too. To much of a main trail can bring about stolen cams. I like to find a spot where if I am more than 10-15 yards away in any direction I cant see the cam through the brush and whatnot. I had decent luck when starting out by finding areas where I would see animals feeding and follow a trail back into the brush a little ways from there and set it up. Make sure you get your positioning of the cam right, not too high or too low, and try angling it right.

if your looking to find a big blacktail buck, then your gonna need to find a spot that has heavy cover with bedding and feed, travel routes in the timber, on the edge of old thick reprod that buts up to bigger timber that has dense cover, blacktail bucks without the aid of a doe being in heat are tough to come by, if you can a natural mineral deposit that helps to, one thing i have found that the blacktail really like at my house i an apple mineral block, they ate that thing up in no time, find a place to put one of those in the above mentioned places, just one thing and it very important, if you havent hunted blacktail then your in for one of the most frustrating fun addicting critters to hunt
