Well, of course the .45 Colt is the older of the two cartridges, and the .45 ACP was actually developed to match the ballistics of the former.
Without delving too deep into the specifics, the differences are minimal with the 'standard loads':
.45 ACP 230 grain bullet @ 830 FPS (military ball load)
.45 Colt 250 grain bullet @ 860 FPS (Remington)
The .45 Colt will usually toss a heavier bullet, and can be loaded hotter in a stronger action.

I stole this off of gun and game. Hope it helps.

No difference. They are both equally inferior to the 9 mm.  :dunno:

Just funnin'.  Best answer above.  That and ACP is for semi autos, mostly, whereas LC is for revolvers and lever guns.

 :chuckle: This should be good!

Like Buck Man said, they're pretty much equal with common  standard factory loads. The Colt has a lot more potential though.

Some of my favorite guns are the 45 ACP/45 Colt convertible revolvers. Then you get the best of both. If you want a revolver go with the Colt. If you want a semi auto get the ACP.

Modern firearms and modern powders can get A LOT more juice out of the 45LC than the acp.
And it will throw heavier bullets.
The previous posts point to the fact that the LC is a revolver cartridge the ACP is primarily a pistol cartridge.

If loaded up the 45lc can be a potent weapon typically found in single action revolvers. the 45 acp is a great defense round found in many semi autos .

:)above is correct except. There is no 45LC, there is 45 Colt and 45 ACP. The L came about when the Army used both 45 Colt and 45 Schoenfield at the same time. The 45 S was a shorter cartridge, when ammo was ordered by outposts the 45 C was sesignated LC to clarify the order.

I have one of each. My 45 colt is a Taurus titanium revolver. Can shoot puny little cowboy loads all the way up to full house loads. I have some hsm bear loads for it that will do a number on the shooter and target  :chuckle: very versatile cartridge. My 45 acp is a Kimber 1911. Its awesome too... my carry gun. I think the colt is more of a powerhouse in modern guns than a acp will ever be.

The best way us to load your own or find somebody who can help you load some. Trail Boss powder was made for this type of load and it works beautifully!
