Don't waste your time!!!!
« on: February 21, 2014, 10:32:48 AM »
So I drew the Gardner unit for cougar permit! Took two days off work drove straight thru for 7 hours got there yesterday at 4:00am with 2 inches fresh snow my unit was about 2 mile square off sagebrush I counted I think 20 pine trees the rest of the 2 miles square was private what a f---ing joke!!!! You guys were all mad you didn't get drawn you can have mine I'm done with this state!!!! Oh ya then drove home 7 more hours and 2 mt passes towing snowmobiles and hounds! Biologist called me on the way home I said who came up with the boundaries it's a joke he said I did that's where a cat was spotted we think went into town2 weeks ago lol  I said ok well its all private and it's only bout a mile big, he said ya I know....... They need not to have permits just a # of a local hound men who can help when the problem is there, he could run down and help don't have 800 people put in for what they think is a cougar removal it's not.....

Sorry about your disappointment, but I would've thought you'd have checked it out better before going all in. Sounds like an expensive mistake.  :dunno: Not trying to flame you or anything but was the land just made private between the time you applied for permits and when you actually arrived there to hunt?

I might be wrong here but I don't think you apply for a specific area or permit. You apply and they tell you where to go if you draw. Wacoyotehunter was complaining about the same general thing.

Wow.  That sucks.

I probably shouldn't say this, but I'm thinking it and I might as well say it:  Do they even have anybody at WDFW anymore that isn't a complete moron?   :dunno:

I would be extremely pissed too.  :bash:
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Yes you apply then theY tell you what units are open I had a choice between entia or gardener I took Gardner! Lady said unit 231 not .0005% of unit 231 it honestly was set up for failure I truly mean that there is no humanly possibly way I was going to cath a cat in a 500 yard flat of sagebrush! I understand they have a tuff job to make everyone happy hunters and non but this is not how you do it! Seriously if you are the biologist get the # of a local hound men who lives in the area who can be there when complaints come in done deal!!! Not put out some big draw and make us think we actually drew something you would have to stay there till march 31 hoping he crossed in the 1 mile flat with the 20 pine trees in the draw! Turn loose the hounds takes the lion into private makes us hound men look like we are the bad guys I want no part of it just thought I would let you guys know its not worth the hassel

BackCountry, thank you for reporting this to the forum.  I really feel bad for you; not only was this a waste of time and other resources, it caused frustration and anger.

I agree with your basic point: WDFW really dropped the ball on this hunt.  I suspect the biologist was worried about his work, which is why he called you.  These types of stories only further the disdain that the people hold over public employees.  For that reason alone the WDFW staff SHOULD receive a severe ear-chewing.

I am well aware that many WDFW staff (employees at various divisions) belong to this forum.  I would hold you in high regards if you were to comment here.  If not, then at least discuss this amongst yourselves, and make an effort to improve your services--because that is what your work is, a service to the public.

Shameful!

Edit: I would like to add that I am NOT a WDFW-hater.  In fact, I stand in awe of a certain biologist at the agency, who has helped me tremendously.  I do have quite of bit of experience with senior management at the agency (not entirely positive, I should add), but that doesn't cause me to be an agency basher.  My point is this: The OP here got sold a bad bill of goods.

Please post a describe of bounderies in GMU 231. It's a huge canyons. If you don't mind post of ur permit and show us what permit look like and try cover ur wild Id or name. I am curious what bounderies say on paper.  I would never give up.  You gotta go thur WHOLE Canyons I mean every "roads" etc with snowmobile and driving with dogs on rigg and have them strike.  If It was me I would spend 2 full of tank to cover canyon to find cut.

If it really is all flat and no trees, I'd think that any cut youd turn on would end up on private land. We ran a lion close to a 15mile chase this year, how is 2 sq mile area gonna work? Let alone with no trees and bordered to private land? A biologist should know better, no way he could be that ignorant.

oh people, some of those permits were nothing but lip service! wdfw can now say they gave a permit and it went unfilled, they had a complaint and were basically giving you an area where the complaint come from! They know damn good and well the chances of that cat being there are slim but were not about to let you cat hunt the whole unit!

Wow.  I am very sorry, I Thought GMU 231 mean whole bounderies but ur permit explain a lot why you feel unfair. I have been this area and I know what it look like and its not fun!   Thanks for share.  Cats normal walk thur there fequency and it just has to be a perfect timing to catch.  Have u put dogs on top rigg and driving around let dogs pick up scent ?
Just like another thread yesterday about  Twisp with four cougars being killed in two weeks. Any Houndmen won't never get chance to entarance his ranch and I can understand how frustrate it would be. Four cougars killed in Less than 200 acerage in two weeks.  It's not as easy as Houndmen think when all privates land is all around.  Hope u get luck soon.

I mentioned this in another thread, these permits have rarely been anything to get excited about.  They have been doing this for years.  I drew one once and it was all 10 and 20 acres pieces of private property.  Impossible to run.

 :yeah:

I thought these new permits were the whole unit not a small segregated area. These permits used to be mostly westside areas, and they were bout useless. I don't remember all the eastside areas for the psrp, thought it was a expansion to be more like the pilot program but I guess I was wrong

My guess is the cat that was seen is one of the 5 cats living across the street up Lookout Mtn road, and one of the 3 killed the last few days up there. I think Village Idiot posted pics of one of them, I know another was killed up there yesterday.

If I drove 7 hrs to get there, at least walk the area. Look for tracks or a travel corridor. Try a predator call, ask permission from neighboring landowners.

I think you were looking in the wrong area if you believe that.

BAckcountry55,  if you decide not to go again. I understand ur frustrate, are u going stay home whole month with permit in ur wallet and plan not go at all?, if you think of another Houndmen might know people who live inside bounderies and they possible call them if Cougar came back. I know you want to hold ur permit but if you decide not to go... I would encourage  Please Call Raph or Donny tomorrow and give permit back to them and they will draw another houndman that live closer who is waiting for it since it snowing hard last night and today and tomorrow.  Please let Raph or Donny know if you quit. I know u don't want to but if it is not worth your time.  We all are waiting for it and want to kill a Cat no matter how bad area it is. Please let them know Tmw how you feel and It has to be perfect timing to catch Cougar.  I hope u have a good time.

I understand your frustration. It's a bad permit. The choice is yours, make the most of it or cry about it.

Pretty sad a member shouts out about a bad expeerience and gets called out. Thanks backcountry for the info it should have been the whole unit obviously there's cats there.for some of you grow up take the info pass it on.no reason to bash on people.at least he made the right decision on not cutting loose the dogs it could have been bad for hound hunteers.

I understand your frustration too, just pointing out that there is more public land in that boundary than the .5 square mile you are claiming is all.
