Bluing, Cerakote, and Parkerizing?
« on: February 21, 2014, 11:42:27 AM »
I'm looking to make my old shotgun look perdy again. But I am curious which one of these I should go with, what are the differences between Bluing, Cerakote, and Parkerizing? Thanks, Kyle

I've heard cerakote is a paint, is that true? Is it more durable than bluing?  Anyone know what parkerizing is?. Thanks for reply, Kyle

Parkerizing is a finish applied through an acid bath. The military uses it on its guns (can't be applied to aluminum so not AR's, think WWII guns).

Cerakote is a baked on ceramic coating. It's been proven to be very tough.

Bluing is a generic term for several processes but basically they all leave a thin coat of oxide on the steel. It's not very rust resistant compared to the other two because it is a form of rust.

So is cerakote impervious to moisture, as in is there any possibility of moisture getting under the coating and rusting from between the barrel and the coating ??

Parkerizing also can not be applied to Stainless steel.    On M1's & M14's the Gas cyl are stainless

Gorge Custom Coatings is the way to go. It is my cousin's business. I just got another rifle back from them and it's amazing! Melisa who is doing the coating is one of the most artistic people I know and she can do about anything you can dream up. They have good prices and quick turn around compared to a lot of the bigger shops. You will be happy if you use them.

So does cerakote look the closest to a blued gun? Or does parkerizing?

Cerakote is more of a textured finish.

Blued is just steel that has been colored. Why the cerakote is a finish added on top of the steel.

Cerakote is tough stuff! As soon as I get caught up on some bolt rifle projects , I'm going to have Gorge Custom do some AR stuff for me in Titanium and Burnt Bronze Cerakote. Actually a mix 60% Burnt Bronze & 40% Black. They said they could swing it, no problem.

I went with midnight blue and it almost looks like bluing, I put it through its paces this year and it still looks brand new.

So does cerakote look the closest to a blued gun? Or does parkerizing?

Parkerizing is a milspec coating that is applied to ferrous steel. It does not look like bluing, it's more like a rough grey or black depending on whether it's Zinc or Mag phosphate.

Cerakote a has a midnight blue that is very dark and glossy and looks a lot like traditional blueing.

Hope this helps
