Another Idaho Elk Hunt Post

A friend has proposed an Elk hunt for next year (Oct-15 Nov 3) in a new area.  He's 'old school' and did his research by going up there and talking to people.  I thought I should at least do a little computer research because I have this awesome forum.

I'm wanting to take my 10 year old son.  But I've never been to this area and hope you guys can help.

Is this a legal and practical place to hunt with an over the counter out of state tag?

Do I need a 4wd to get out because of possible snow?

Is it terrain my boy can deal with?

About half way up the left side of the highlighted 'circle' is the proposed Base camp. "Camp Creek" with a possible spike camp to the east.

He said motorcycles and horses were allowed but no quads?

Any thing else I should consider?

motorcycles allowed but not ATV's    I have not personally hunted that area but near there is it is rugged country

i hunted in there a few years back pretty steep country till you get to the top (witch takes a while!)   there were a few trails that atvs could use but not many.  motorcycles were allowed.  we only hunted there 4 days saw a few cows.  did see a nice bull in a camp.  most people we talked to were deer hunting.  can't remember what dates we went but it was earlier in the season.  supost to be better with snow pushing elk lower.  nice country though... lots of old burns.

 If I read the map right I have hunted north east of that and it is steep and deep stuff. It was more open than a lot of north Idaho so it was really fun to hunt.  Lots of the trails are pretty narrow goat trails that they have open to motrocycles and horses but not atvs. 4 wheeler wouldnt fit on the trail anyways. The elk hunting was good but I was a fair distance from there so the terrain probably similiar but dont know about the elk numbers

I don't know much about that specific area...but if I were your buddy I would be less than pleased that you posted a picture/map of my proposed camp site/hunt area on the internet even if its not that specific

Yep.  I wouldn't be all too happy if I was your buddy.  Especially if we were successful and you came back and posted pictures of the Elk.

Cant believe you posted a map of the McCall area....Owell as long as your not looking for ground squirrels to hunt I guess im cool with you leaving it up...

Ps...its very steep country & the snow could be non existent to up to a few feet...october in idaho can be pretty tricky to plan for....hope for the best, plan for the worst

I knew somebody would go there.  Like the place is a big secret. 

I also hunt Ryderwood for early Muzzleloader. Dang.  Another honey hole compromised!

Be sure to pick up wolf tags, I have been in that country a couple times while in school at UI and both times saw multiple wolves.  My first wolf encounter was up there actually. Initially it was cool, but became disappointing to see them.  Unfortunately no tag.  There are elk up there for sure, we saw two herds of cows hiking up there, but I would imagine the areas been heavily impacted by the wolves.

About taking your son, there are FAR better places to take a 10 year old.  It's some vertical country. 

As far as weather goes, I was up there during the summer months so I can't speak to the snow load that time of the year. You probably wouldn't have any issues that first part of the season, but by the tail end of it you might expect a dumping of snow.  Weather is fairly unpredictable from what I've gathered.

I have a friend that used to archery hunt close to that area a few years ago before the wolves.  He recently told me he heard it was on its way back up as far as elk numbers go.  Awesome country.   Be pprepared for snow and you'll be fine.
