hey guys so last season '2013' I shot a deer at 460 yards with my 7mm rem mag with a 150 grain federal nosler balastic tips... prior in 2013 I shot a bear at 420 yards and dropped him with a shot through the shoulder and exiting through the neck he didn't move . but on the deer however he ran about 400 yards and died . but I was not able to find him until 12 hours later on the next day ... shot him at 6:00pm and recoverd him the next morning and he was eaten by one of the FEW  methow valley cougars  ...so my question is should I try something else ? I feel like these balastic tips are just punching through animals and not doing tons of damage? I shot 3 bears and 3 deer with the same exact bullet in the past 3 years and all of them have just passed straight through the animal leaving no severe wounds ... just nice placed shots besides this deer in 2013 ... I made a good shot on him he fell hard really hard rolled 2 times down hill tried getting up chin on ground front legs under belly kicking finally got his feet under him and made it into heavy timber cover and laid and died .. I just wasn't impressed with these balastics tips any suggestions ?? yayayay I know shot placement shot placement shot placement I know but wouldn't hurt to have some help from a bullet ;p thanks for any input guys appreciate it few pics of 2013 bear straight pass through

The only thing I can guess is that you lost too much velocity and the bullets are not expanding properly if at all and possibly acting like a solid and just passing through. especially on a thinner hide like a deer. Like I said this is a TOTAL GUESS. I use 150g Nosler BT in my 7mm loaded to about 3100fps, and I shot 2 deer at about 100 yards. both had about 1 good "hop" in them and they fell about 10 yards away from where I shot them. maybe try the heavier bullets or the sst's.

EDIT: so I just went to Noslers web sight. the recommended performance range for the BT is a Max of: 3200fps and a Min of: 1800fps. Assuming your bullet is going 3000fps at the muzzle at 460 yards its going about 2159fps. that's getting really close to the minimum. like I said though Im just gussing, it could have just been a lucky shot on the bear (hit a bone and the bullet fragmented and hit something important or tumbled) and un unlucky one on the deer. sometimes when your hunting, S Happens...

These have been nothing but deadly the last 3 years but 2013 had me pushing some distance and they wernt executing to my likings . 100-200 yards they dropped deer and bear in there tracks . But 2013 they just wernt up to par at long distances thanks everyone for the feedback very much appreciated !!

I shot 160 Partitions and then switched to Accubonds.  Never had an animal move more than a few feet.  I've had ballistic tips break apart on impact on a couple of animals and will never go back to them.  I do use ballistic tips to sight my rifles in as they have the same ballistic coefficient and profile as the Accubonds.  I also use the ballistic tips if I go coyote hunting.

I had some 30 cal years back that would only mushroom on one side.  Could be a bad lot of bullets, most ballistic tips I know of usually come apart.

When I shot 7mag I always shot Barnes TSX out of it and I dropped about 6 elk with it within 15 yards of impact.  I still use the TTSX in my 325 wsm for elk but have been using the Ballistic tips out of my 270 for deer for awhile and I have dropped 4 deer with it, not one of them moved from where they were shot at. Closest was 25 yards and farthest was 420yards.  I honestly don't think bullet choice is that big of a deal, even if the shot is good some animals are just gonna run.  Looks like your shot was kinda high and my guess it just hit the top of the lungs.  If your gun shoots the Ballistic tips well I would stay with them.  For every bullet you are gonna here good and bad stories.
