Anyone have a 475 or larger caliber rifle?
« on: February 23, 2014, 06:37:43 PM »
I've played around with a few different  375, 416, and 458 caliber rifles and now I have the urge for something bigger. While at a gun shop last week one of the guys said that he wanted a "tropical" rifle in a true big bore caliber and that's what got me thinking.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a 500 Jeffery or a 505 Gibbs. You can get the CZ 550 Magnum Express in either caliber. Just curious if anybody else has one and what they think of it.

My buddy a member on here just got his rifle back that he has been waiting some time for. It's a 585, he still has to get a stock made for it. So right now it's just a barreled action. We are excited about shooting it. Some massive chunks of lead down range!!!

I picked up a 505 Gibbs a couple years ago.  I have shot it a few times and it seems good.  Packs a wallop though.  Not even close to comparison to a 375 hh or even a 416 rigby.

I have several hundred down my 450 Dakota and love that gun.  Roughly equal to shooting all three barrels at once on a triple barrel 30.06 in terms of recoil.  That has been my trainer for big bores and I'm comfortable with it.  A 505 Gibbs will be 20-25% more recoil.

my 505 has feed issues that I need to resolve before I consider it a decent dg rifle.

love the 450 Dakota though.

both these are cz rifles without brakes.  The set triggers are handy on big bores.  But avoid them when hunting.  Too easy to set off early as my dad found out with his buff!

Check out b&M rifles and look at the 500 MDM. They also have the B&M 500 that is a shortened to 2.25" ultra case. I may be picking up a wildcat version of that case , but 2.35" in a remington 700 for a try on bears next fall.

The B&M cartridges are a well thought out and proof tested group. Michael owner of B&M is a great guy and helped me a bunch with my 450 Ultra Magnum and load development with the CEB BBW #13 bullets. He is a vault of knowledge on the big bores. Out of all the cartridges he's developed and makes, he told me his go to rifle and favorite is the 9.3 B&M. You can check out a bunch of info on his cartridges and other big bores over on the Accuratereloading.com forums. He goes by "Michael458".

SSK Chambers and builds the B&M's

They make a .50 B&M in a wicked compact package!

Might go all the way with a 50BMG that is a hoot to shoot even off hand.
Here is my Barrett 99. They made a special run of these with 24" fluted barrels.
A friend of mine plinking a rock with it, just because he can.

My dad has a Holland & Holland 505 Gibbs double rifle.  I shot that thing and it donkey kicks you in the shoulder.  He also has the Barrett .50 BMG semi-auto.  That is very nice to shoot.
Cut em!

I had an AR-50 for about 2 weeks. I got it for $2700 including a NF BR scope! I only put 30 rounds through it before somebody offered me the right price and it went on down the road. It was fun, but just barely qualifies as should fired! :chuckle:

I know a few guys who play around with the 375 Ruger case cut off at the shoulder with a 50 cal bullet crammed in there. I have a dummy round somewhere of a WSM cut off at the shoulder with a 750gr A-max sitting on top. Just never got around to doing anything with them.

It looks like the Cabelas up north has a 505 Gibbs in the gun library.  Maybe I need to take a road trip!

They guys who refer to Michael from B&M are correct, he is an outstanding guy and very approchable with questions.

This is a man who LOVES big bore rifles and has a passion for bullets like no other.

If you want to read up on him, check this thread out.  It has taken on a life of it's own.  Been going on for over 6.25 years with close to 300 pages (looooooong pages) of info.
