Well, since I threw JackOfAllTrades for a loop, I'll be more specific. The company I work for pays for my fuel and I get a $600 a month car allowance. I can have anything I want, as long as it's a four door. Since I have to travel to Central Oregon a few times a month, I really need an all wheel drive or 4x4 vehicle. All of the SUVs that I like are in the $35-45k range or I can get a pickup, which is what I really want, for $40-45k. Even though the company pays my fuel, I don't want them complaining either. I currently get 22 mpg average in my Charger so dropping to 18 mpg isn't that significant. I may pull the trigger in the next couple of weeks.

My dad has a 04 5.9 four door 8' bed. Silver. Leveling kit. Its not a Laramie, no leather but power widows and what not. 167k. Real clean truck. What are they selling for? He's kicked around buying a newer diesel or just keeping this and hoping to not have to put a bunch of money into it down the road. It gets 18-23 around town and towing. Its a beast pulling. All he's ever had to do is a lift pump and a front wheel bearing. Minus oil changes and brakes nothing major. IMO anything under 07 and reputable is a good diesel truck. My favorite motor being the 5.9 cummins tho. I drove both my buddies chevys and fords and I noticed a considerable amount of difference towing our jeeps. They are known for weak trannies but if you do a LOT of towing heavy loads Ive heard a billet torque converter is the key for the automatics. His hasn't had any tranny issuers and we tow quite a bit with it. I waited 5 years for my warranty to expire on my 6.7. I was getting terrible mileage especially towing, then did all the deletes and a tuner and now I'm getting exceptional mileage with a 6" lift and 37's. My buddy has a new 6.7 Ford. Its a nice truck but in the last two years has had its fair amount of time back at the dealership.

For that price range you could get a fully loaded 14 2500 5.7 hemi without the air bag rear suspension. The ride is a little stiff and needs some weight in back to smooth it out. 1900 lbs of apples doesn't make the rear end squat down but helps the ride out. The scale says it weighs 7380 without me in it and saw 12.6 on a drive down the river the other day. Those cummins motors are an extra 8195 plus 2995 for the transmission and that equals 5000 gallons of gas :dunno: to save 4 or 6 mpg unless you tow heavy loads every day didn't make sense to spend another 11000. When you look under the hood you can actually see a motor which sounds pretty mean at 5500 rpms. Look under the hood with a diesel stuffed in there. It kind of funny to climb in to a running truck and the radio isn't blaring from when you shut it of the night before and wonder why the green nozzle at the gas station doesn't fit on the first fuel up :bash:

What's a Lonestar, Steve?

No such thing as a new Ford with a manual transmission unless you go to a F550, and then there's no such thing as 4x4.

That's not an issue with the newer diesels. In fact it's quite the opposite when towing. I'll admit I like the sound of the gas motors struggling to pull a RV to the top of the hill. :chuckle:
