Best gas mileage 2wd pickup
« on: February 22, 2014, 02:50:55 PM »
I have been looking into getting another rig for gas mileage. I was wondering what the best 2wd pickups get for MPG. Any rigs to stay away from? I don't know much about 4 cyls. so any suggestions.

Well you only have two options for mid-sized "new" trucks, Toyota or Nissan. I believe the Toyota 4 cylinder is the most efficient, but not by much over the Nissan.

Large trucks, Ford ecoboost v6 and either of the variable displacement v8 are about equal until you put your foot in it.

I had a Mazda B2200 that I ran until it wouldn't. Gas mileage was around 20/25

Buying a second truck to get better gas mileage? If it's a commuter car, wouldn't a sedan be better?

I may be mistaken, but the only year Ford offered a diesel in the Ranger pickup was 1983.  Knew a guy who had one, and loved it!  I now have a 1986 Ranger 2WD pickup with the 2.9 V6 and a 5-speed.  (This was the first year they went to the 2.9 V6 and it went until 1992 when they went to the 3.0, which was a big mistake!)  I had a 1991 Ranger 4x4 pickup with the 2.9 V6 and got 27 mpg on the highway.  I told guys with 4 cylinder Toyotas that, and they all said  "Gee, I don't get that good with my 4-banger Toyota!"  If you get a Ford Ranger, do NOT get an '83-'85 model with the 2.8 V6!  :bdid:

Ford did offer the Ranger in a diesel in 83-84, but that motor was replaced for the 85-87 line up. The later motors offered better hp for the same fuel mileage. Nothing wrong with the 83-84 engine. You just get a little better performance out of the 85-87.

if by "truck" you mean a full size, most of the 80's and 90's fords with the straight six 300 (4.9l) get 18-19 mpg highway...

A remarkable experience is one where the pain is forgotten so quickly, the frustrations and struggles are forgotten the minute you’re done.

I can’t wait to do it the next time.

It would but I have a blazer right now so it would be nice to have a bed. And I just like pickups more than cars :chuckle:

does it have to be a pickup? i know i would rather have a truck, but if you can get by with a car get a beeter old metro, they get like 50mpg, or if it has to be a pickup i would stick with a little toyota, they are like bullet proof and they can run on minimal cylenders  :chuckle:

4 cyl. engines were the standard engine on the early Rangers.  Nothing wrong with them at all.  Once you've had a pickup, it's hard to do without one.

My 88 2wd Toyota still runs like a top. 22R motor, 4 speed manual. 30mpg. When I got it 12 years ago, the body was all beat up. Still looks rough, but drives great to this day.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!
