I'm sure everyone already knows this but if on a longer trip, to save your filter system from plugging up from repeated dirty sources, use a coffee filter and rubber band on the inlet if possible. These weigh nothing and filter out the larger junk so you won't have to field clean your filter. Shorter trips don't matter much since you can clean at home. Also if using a steripen, use the coffee filter to filter out the sediment and other junk. Of course you'll need two containers. Just a thought  :twocents: I've only done this once but it worked pretty good. I use an MSR Miniworks filter.

Katadyn hiker pro for me. Used it all over with great success.

They look nicer and can filter more water, but take up more room. Wouldn't mind the katadyn either I guess. Does it seem bulky or do you notice it in your pack?

I dont find it bulky at all. It has a nice zippered carrying pouch that it comes in. I don't typically bring the cleaning kit on trips, so that takes some of the bulk and weight out. I'd say the zippered pouch probably measures 4"x8".

Sawyer mini showed up in mail today.
Thanks for the tip.

I might buy the hiker pro and stash it away for the zombie apocalypse too.

Just order off ebay or amazon. It's cheaper. Besides, REI doesn't support hunting so they don't get my $

I hate amazon, every time I buy something from there my card number gets stolen :bash:

I like buying stuff at rei and returning it if I don't like it.

I have the hiker and hiker pro and prefer the regular hiker. Costs less and you don't have to worry about breaking the little plastic contraption that is on the bottom of the hiker pro. I have never tried the inline filters but like to keep my bladder in the pack and just pump it in through the hose

I really like my Sawyer Squeeze Filter. Better than a pump, in my opinion.
Same thing I use. I like it.
