Water purifier pump suggestions?
« on: February 26, 2014, 07:43:24 PM »
Time to start thinking about my pack for upcoming elk season. Usually hike in and spike camp. I've been using a steri-pen if need be, but don't like the idea of drinking dead stuff. Looking at light, small, packable pumps that will last a long time.
Anybody have suggestions or thoughts?

I really like my Sawyer Squeeze Filter. Better than a pump, in my opinion.

Been using the Katadyn Hiker Pro for about 5 years now. Used it everywhere around Washington from the coastal streams to the mountains. Never had it clog up once yet.

Thanks for the tips. They look pretty cool.

Katadyn hiker pro for me. Used it all over with great success.

They look nicer and can filter more water, but take up more room. Wouldn't mind the katadyn either I guess. Does it seem bulky or do you notice it in your pack?

Do you use a hydration bladder? If so you can rig the mini in line and filter as you drink

I used the MSR Sweetwater for years until I broke it. It was a good filter, never had trouble with it.

I use the Hiker Pro also.  I have not had it completely clog up, but I have had it get really stiff.  We were pumping out of a creek with a lot of sedimintary soil with Bentonite in it.

One advantage I've found to the Hiker Pro is that you can pump out of some very small trickles where it would be very difficult to obtain water otherwise.

I've never noticed the extra bulk, because it's all I've ever used.

Guess I was only one using a steri pen.
Sounds like everyone likes the sawyer or katadyn. Makes researching easy for me. Thanks for the input thus far
