saftey of 20 year old youth bow?
« on: April 12, 2014, 03:14:23 PM »
So I've held on to my first compound bow I got when I was 7, its 20-21 years old now, and my 9 year old wants it. His birthday is next month, so I was thinking about getting it out of storage, and getting a new string put on and some arrows cut, and giving it to him as a birthday gift.

I'm not really bow tech savvy, so I'm not sure if anything else may not be safe on the bow after all these years, don't remember the brand, but I think its a browning. Might be way off on that though

Should I be worried about limbs or cams? String is def getting replaced, probably put a whisker buscuit on it as well.

Thanks in advance!

It really depends on brand, limb construction, draw weight and what kind of storage facility it's been in.  Without question I would replace the string and possibly the cables.  Would need more details of the bow before giving an opinion on how safe it might be.

Not sure if he is still there, but Ranch & Home, Kennewick did have one of the top bow techs in the northwest.  Might want to take it in and ask for their top tech to take a look at it.  Steve's Archery in Walla Walla would be a good place too.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

If I remember right that tech at R&Home's name was John.  Good luck.  Hope all works out for you.
