  since I don't hunt ducks much, do you have to turn the bands in? Ive seen a lot of people on here that are excited about shooting banded birds.

You should go to this site and fill out the report form online.

 http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl/

They will give you the bird history immediately. I'm surprised nobody here asked you the question yet. Where was the bird from? I shot one last year and the bird was from way north in Alberta. It was 10 years old and flew the migration to Washington 800+ miles( each trip? you count the miles). My buddy and I shot another last weekend that was just a baby born this year and tagged on Sept 1st!!! Only flew 175 miles from BC. Oh well I think its great that they are tracking the ducks and would love to hear where yours was tagged.

I went to the website listed on the band as soon as I got home from my hunt and entered the information required for the report, I got this response:

INFORMATION FROM OUR FILES:
Banding information for the reported band is not available because we have not received the data from the bander and we will be contacting them to request it.  If we have questions about your report we will contact you.  Otherwise, if you requested a Certificate of Appreciation, we will send it to you when the banding data are received. Please do not report the band again.  If you have any questions, please email us at bandreports@usgs.gov

So Im stuck waiting for further information

the website listed on the band

That should tell you it is a recent banding right there.
So Far I've got 1 band with a Web Address on it. (www.reportband.gov)  Banded in 2011...  all the others have read "call 1-800-327-band".  I don't know exactly when they switched to web address' but it has been in the last couple years.

I figured it was a more recently banded bird due to the fact the band looks brand new, nice and shiny silver as well.
