I carried the Super Blackhawk in 44mag while on back country hunts when I lived in MT. 5.5" barrel and blued. Packmyrer (sp) grips. Moisture was not big problem for me..carried in uncle mikes shoulder holster. (Less chance of catching on brush and what not as I'm archery hunter. I love the feel and carry weight. Highly recommend it.
Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me

I think a great pack gun would be a 4 5/8" barrel Blackhawk in 45colt. (a 45colt from a Ruger can be loaded to have more energy than a 44mag)

-Steve
i agree. Plus it only weighs 36 oz. the redhawks are nice but weigh a ton. I think the double action/ action bebate is moot on a big bore.

I agree the redhawks are like a boat anchor I do not enjoy packing them.

If you want a light packing ruger get a flattop in 44 special or 45colt.  Or if you want to spend the money get an orginal flattop in 44mag.

Don't be fooled by a lighter weaker frame Vaquero model of any brand to load warm or even factory hunting/bear/defense loads. They will not hold up to what the Super Blackhawk can handle.

The flattop has a smaller frame than the standard blackhawk, not weaker.  But I would stay away from the Vaquero.

There is some good load info for the flat tops. Agreed they're not near the same level as the Blackhawk/superblackhawk. They're actually a tad heavier than the Blackhawk do to there steel grip frame

From.the sounds of it I'm guessing they.used to make the redhawk in other barrel.lengths than 7.5 and 9.5 which.is good ill.have to.look for a used super rehawk in 5.5 stainless. I don't load my own ammo so ill probably stick with .44 mag because of it being easy to find over loading a .41mag  or.45 lc .if anyone has a used 5.5 redhawk in stainless let me know .what holsters do u guys like for backcountry carry? Western ,shoulder ,hip etc?

They made a 4" Redhawk just a few years ago. I guess the must have discontinued it recently. :dunno:

The 5" version is hard to find. I wish I still had mine.

im using a hip set up right now. Uncle mikes holster mounted to a belt a thigh strap I made my self. Rides nice and snug and low! Gunslinger style. My only pistol right now is my 10.5" sbh. Its not the best option but I've made it work very well for me.
My only complaint is the texture of the uncle mikes is very loud!  Durable holster but loud! I'd say you will have to decide which way is best for you. Start packing it and you'll soon know what's working and what's not.

get a judge or a governor cuz that way you have a 410 shotgun.  the 45 lc is every bit a cartridge a 44 mag is.  I am sure the judge
price will save you.  I just bought 2 judges on this site for $400.  don't know if they come in any thing longer than 3 inches.   thanks,   mike w

Those Uncle Mike's holster are super light, but the belt loops tear out too easy and you could lose your pistol.  I've got them for my .357 and .44 mag.  My .357 broke as we were setting up camp and my pistol ended up on the ground.  I repaired (improved) it paracord and used to all week.  But I'd never trust one again.

I end up carrying my S&W 681 .357 because my Ruger Blackhawk .44mag (7.5) is too much to carry around.  But I'll take it to Alaska if that opportunity comes again.

Yes I have the Redhawk in 5.5".  Another great one is the smith & Wesson .44 mag in stainless.
