My new squirrel gun! .500S&W

I picked up my new bear tamer today. Little scary it feels like it's about the same weight as my .44 Ruger Redhawk. Has a 4" barrel with interchangeable breaks! It's a beast can't wait to try it out...

Pray you never have to shoot it without head phones and or plugs in. They are nice guns. I have never loved them but the ones I have shot have been pretty decent.

You should enjoy that, I've never shot the short barrel 500 S&W but I have owned the full size. A stout handload from a S&W .44 Mag Mountain pistol recoiled more than full house loads in the full sized .500. Let us know how it recoils. I wonder if it's on par with a Ruger Alaskan .454, I bet the porting tames the recoil a bit. It's going to be loud and there may be a chance of brush fires with the muzzle blast!

I have heard the mosquitos in Alaska are huge, but maybe the squirrels are, too?  It must be a huge rodent to need all 6 rounds of that!

Owned one for a couple years!  Deadly accurate if you can stand the recoil.   550 grains are deadly!!!

I know this thread is a couple weeks old but have you shot your 4in. 500 yet?

I have the exact same 4in. 500 and love mine.  It's pretty heavy on the recoil side of things but it's so much fun to shoot I just work thru it.  The 500 S&W, IMO, is much like shooting a .50 BMG.  They both are a lot of fun to shoot and you can just feel/sense the power of them both but neither is something I'd want to spend all do doing.  The muzzle blast is pretty substantial.  Can you say "headache".

I bought my 500 back in 2006 from Sportsman Warehouse and they also had a 2 1/2in. 500 that came in sort of a kit with a real nice Pelican case.  I think they called it The Bear Defense 500 or something like that.  They had two of those Bear Defense 500 kits there.  Both only had a 2.5 inch barrel and one had orange grips the other kit had black.  I almost bought one of them but I thought the gun looked kind of odd with that huge frame and such a short barrel and I figured the recoil on a 2.5 inch 500 S&W had to be brutal.  I've never seen one of those kits since.  Maybe I should have bought one as a collector item.

I did notice the very first time I shot mine that if I didn't use an extremely tight grip the cylinder would come unlocked and I'd have to click it back shut every firing.  Has anyone else ever had this problem shooting a short barreled 500 SW?

Are you sure your thumb isn't directly behind the cylinder release button?  The recoil could be causing you to push the button....
