Snow

Winter seems to be finally here, was wondering if anybodies get in out there.  I'm sure excited about it, them wild birds will hold a little better.

I'll be out all day tomorrow and maybe Sunday.  I'll post a report if it's worthy.

They were holding tight this weekend.  I shot a limit on Sat and a limit this morning.  Didn't take long.

My brothers and I were out yesterday, about 6 inches of snow on the ground. Daytime high up in Oroville was a balmy 17 degrees. Winds weren't as bad as today though.
Birds were holding too well. Dog snapped up one quail that didn't want to get up. I tried to catch one with my hands, but he flushed right as I touched him.
I was practically standing on one pheasant before the dog finally got it up.
We did well though. Three limits of quail and a pheasant.

i don't know how they were holden so well i was at the revere on sat. and i saw about 12 rootys but the all flushed at about 70 yards, took the bell off the dog and everything to be super quiet.

man the wind was howling when I went out and it was wicked cold but we did manage to bust a covey of about 50 quail...man do they fly fast in the wind...did my fair share of missing ...but got enough to make a meal...and I got one rooster too...I dont mind the cold, but the wind sure didnt help my percentages...

I'm up off Trent by the college here at work and haven't got the wind, but man is the snow slowing the travel in front of the store.

Yes, pheasants and quail are fun in the snow...if you can get to them. The road in front of my house in Rockford is almost up to my knees in snow this morning. The wife and I had to shovel a path from across the street; through the street and up the driveway; just to get our Mazda to the garage. I doubt many of the County roads will see a plow for days. Heavy, heavy snow; please error on the side of caution for those hunting trips.

Will grouse stay below the heavy snow or will they stay where they were to start with?

I'm not sure about ruffed grouse but blue grouse migrate UP in the winter. They will sit in fir trees and feed on the needles all winter. They are probably pretty difficult to get to this time of year, with all the snow.

Had a great past three weeks hunting the snow. It didn't get crunchy till the past few days. With the adverse weather, cold as hell and snowing, I didn't see hardly any guys out. I enjoyed some pretty good hunting, and saw more roosters killed in the last three weeks than I did the entire earlier part of the season.

I just got back and the birds were flushing 100 yards  away. The snow was hard and they just ran like crazy. We did pretty good but we had to pull every trick out of our sleeves and a little luck helped.
