This critter was barely a foot into the brush and you can barely see a leg. Sneaky...

How many times have we hunted these green jungles of western Washington and came up empty handed and said, "well, there's no deer in there"... Riiiiiiiight...

I watched this bugger cross the road by my house. Literally less than a foot into the brush.

I remember hunting a clearcut with an old girlfriend.  As I was dropping my binoculars I saw a small blacktail buck clear as day out of my peripheral vision.  I grabbed the gfriend and had her get ready.  She asks, "Where is it!"  In which I respond, "I'm not really sure, but he's right over here!" The both of us glassed and looked for ten minutes without seeing anything.  I was beginning to believe I was having another one of the 'Messed In The Head' moments :chuckle:  About the time we relax he bounds off into the brush.  He had been within 40 yards of us in plain view and was completely camouflaged.  They are amazing little critters!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Sneaky is an understatement.. more like inter-dimensional.  One of the main things that fueled my blacktail persuit as a kid was seeing tracks but never seeing the animal. It took a few years to eventually find one while tracking, after that it was game on! Blacktail seem to only show themselves after hard earned blood and sweat. More bucks were shot on the last day, last hour being so tired and discouraged I couldn't take another step.

I've hunted BT's my whole life. When I got started dad always taught me to look for ears or flickering of ears cause chances are you'll never see anything else. It's crazy how quiet they can be walking right in front of you.
Some animals WERE harmed in the making of this Hunter. They were also dragged through the dirt, butchered and tasted delicious fried with butter and bacon.

I saw this ^ black tail this afternoon. Of course it saw me way before I saw it. The stinker stood there motionless for almost 15 minutes.

For all of you hunters in Eastern Washington, or Idaho or Eastern Oregon for that matter, I know you think this a waste of time, a useless thread.  It really isn't.  Blacktail deer are something special, because of the thick vegetation over here.  We all are very lucky to live in such a diverse region (deserts, alpine, rain forests, swamps, &c.).  If you ever have a chance, please try to hunt the blacktail deer in Western Washington or Oregon someday.

You WILL be disappointed.

Just right of center between the base of those two trees.  Below the blue.  Though I don't see any antlers.  You must not have big blacktail bucks on your wall MadMax :chuckle:
