Degreasing Cat Skulls
« on: March 12, 2014, 07:59:00 PM »
Just wondering on average for people degreasing with dawn and water how long it takes to degrease Bobcat, Lynx and cougars. Knowing it varies, just want to here peoples experiences.

Depends on the skull.  I usually use dawn to start for several weeks to a month.  Then finnish in Acetone for a month or so.

Michelle:  I currently have two Russian (European) wild boar skulls soaking in heated Dawn dish soap.  I am approaching one month soak time (changing water every couple days).  There appears to be very little grease left in/on skulls.  I prefer my euro mounts to retain realism in the teeth (i.e plaque, tarter).  For the finished product I do not soak the entire skull with teeth in peroxide solution for whitening.  Instead I "paint" only the skull when whitening.  If I switch to an acetone bath will the acetone discolor the teeth and tusks?
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were.
