Dark Whitetail antlers
« on: November 20, 2008, 01:50:37 PM »
Look how dark the antlers were on the Whitetail I shot during the late hunt this year, they were splotchy and almost as dark as a Blacktail.

The area we were hunting is thick like the westside (just south of Colville)  Kind of weird, most of the WT I have shot had light colored horns.

If the rut was on, maybe a doe stopped short.  :chuckle:

Chocolate brown antlers are from rubbing the pine trees and maybe eating them too.  A taxidermist was telling me this.
These bucks were rubbing pine trees and surrounded by pines.

Just about every one of my whitetails have dark antlers.  I only hunt heavy timber and thick brush so the antlers tend to be darker than the deer from open sage, grass or wheat fields.  Fir and pine seem to give them a nice chocolate brown while cedar gives them a little reddish brown.

Here are some with lighter antlers where there are pines.  There are also tamarak and fir.
